Hello,

I recently bought an old craftsman table saw with a 3/4 HP capacitor start motor (model # 115 18910). The motor died on me failry quickly despite running well when the seller demonstrated it. When it died, it first took a long time to get up to speed, making me think the capacitor needed to be replaced.

When I was mucking around inside the casing, I accidentally pulled off one of the wires soldered on to the switch assembly. Now I'm trying to rewire, but I have several problems…

1) it is difficult to solder a wire solidly back on to the switch b/c the rotor is in the way. I have no idea how to remove the rotor from the end casing. I assume it involves removing the bearing, which seems like a bad idea.
2) I don't have a wiring diagram, and I don't really know what the switch assembly does anyway
3) The capacitor is bad, but I cant find a company that makes one that fits with the same specs. The one in the original capacitor is shaped like a deck of cards, and all the capacitors with the same specs seem to be cylindrical. Assuming the specs on the capacitor are the same, is it OK to rig a new capacitor?

Thanks!

It might be worth replacing the bearings as long as you have it apart. Given the model number it is over 25 years and the grease is probably more like wax and hardened up. There is most likely a snap ring on the outside of the bell end that will need to be removed to get the bearings out. You should be able to find a capacitor to replace without much difficulty. You might look here.
