I recently bought an old craftsman table saw with a 3/4 HP capacitor start motor (model # 115 18910). The motor died on me failry quickly despite running well when the seller demonstrated it. When it died, it first took a long time to get up to speed, making me think the capacitor needed to be replaced.
When I was mucking around inside the casing, I accidentally pulled off one of the wires soldered on to the switch assembly. Now I'm trying to rewire, but I have several problems…
1) it is difficult to solder a wire solidly back on to the switch b/c the rotor is in the way. I have no idea how to remove the rotor from the end casing. I assume it involves removing the bearing, which seems like a bad idea.
2) I don't have a wiring diagram, and I don't really know what the switch assembly does anyway
3) The capacitor is bad, but I cant find a company that makes one that fits with the same specs. The one in the original capacitor is shaped like a deck of cards, and all the capacitors with the same specs seem to be cylindrical. Assuming the specs on the capacitor are the same, is it OK to rig a new capacitor?
