Veneer has natural holes

I’m making a walnut jewelry box’s and wanted to finish off the stop with a maple burl veneer. After flattening out I noticed some 1/8 inch holes naturally accruing
So when I apply glue if it comes through the holes it will make blotches where the glue is when I finish it
What’s my options

FYI I’m using tightbond veneer glue. It’s similar to yellow glue consistency
would contact cement be better and might not come through the holes?
the project is only 6 x12

I've started doing more of my veneering with standard Titebond, applying it to both veneer and substrate, letting it dry (60 mins or so?) and then ironing it on with a clothes iron.

It's been amazing, and expanded my veneering into curved surfaces, with no vacuum press needed.

It's sort of the best of both worlds, between contact cement (so unforgiving!), speed, and ease. And I think it will minimize your hole-y glue problem.

Once ironed on, just fill the holes with your choice of filler/epoxy/superglue/whatever.

Thanks I am worried about the glue oozing out and then when finishing it will show. Up I will sand but it’s real thin

I’ve heard about the iron on technique using Pva glue . I have not tried it too chicken.
I might as well do some testing because I’ve had the same problem KcOlsen is thinking about. Titebond veneer glue is dark and very thick so that does help. I can see big hole s being a problem.

The best solution here is use hide glue. It does not interfere with finish.

I disagree with using any other type of glue, as if they bleed through its bad news.

I’ve done my share of iron on and love it. But — it will pull, so you can’t do bookmatched panels taped together. I did bookmatched panels using Heat Lock and it wasn’t good.

I do not know if it it will bleed thru. I can’t see any reason it wouldn’t when the glue plasticizes. So I wouldn’t use it here unless you have some to test.
