Guesses on butcher block species?

I got this old butcher block countertop secondhand, and upon scraping off the old bright yellow finish I’m left with some interesting wood… but what is it? I got the colors as true as I could. It has a rather red tone, but also some parts that are distinctly purple, blending from reddish to bluish purple across the streaks. The grain looks like oak, but I’ve never seen this much color variation in oak. And I don’t think the whole thing is heavy enough to be oak. So, any guesses?

Seems somewhat harder than poplar, and heavier I think, though that’s hard to judge. Seems reasonably dense, denser than the poplar I have, but Im not entirely sure and don’t know how to describe it in any useful way.

Looking at both on hobbithouse I think beech is more likely, maybe. Putting both on my list to get more of for comparison when I can.

Please, dive right in! I’m the kind of nerd who appreciates sample size, so the more people who confirm, the more confident I’ll be in ordering some beech to build storage to go with the bench. My budget is nonexistent and I don’t have easy access to buy lumber in person, so placing an order like that can feel pretty high stakes.
