I made this jewelry box for my girlfriend 2 years ago for Christmas. I’m sure some of you will recognize the pattern. I got it from a magazine a few years ago. I can’t for the life of me remember which magazine it was though.
It was made on my dad’s older 14 inch import bandsaw. Lucklily we had just gotten a new blade however it was still slow going through about 4 and a half inches of walnut.
The biggest thing I got out of it is that a bandsaw box is more about sanding than it is about the bandsaw. I do not have an oscillating spindle sander and at the time only have some small 1 inch long drum sanders of various sizes. It mostly ended up in hand sanding for several hours. I think all told I had about 30 hours worth of hand sanding in it. I definitely would not do it the same way again and probably wont make another one until I have a better way to sand it.
It was definitely an interesting and fun project. She was thrilled with it and that is definitely the most important part.

Very good looking box you built. I have made that design many times and you are correct, all boxes take allot of sanding as well as some hand carving. I think that is what I like most about them. After everything is cut and put together, I enjoy carving and hand sanding (hand a power tools) and watch that block of wood turn into something very beautiful.
