had some problems with tearing when mortising because of the very soft wood.

some of ny joints are not tight either. oh well, now that i worked it out on a small
pine bench, i can redo another one in oak

It started out as a big board but after a few unfortunate problems i ended up with a cheese board. Finished with mineral oil.

walnut and hickory mystery hammer

This was one of the two things I made this weekend. This hammer is made with a hickory handle and a walnut head. Its the “mistery hammer” as shown by Roy Underhill in one of his TV shows.

I was over at his shop this weekend and we made this along with a bow saw (which I will post later when I finish shaping the second arm..).

This was challenging to make as it requires very precise layout and cutting. there is the illusion of a dovetail on each side of the face and the handle is split in three, producing three thru-tenons. I probably will card-scrape it smooth and finish it with wax.

hand cut oak and pine box

A little box made of pine (the sides) and red oak (bottom and top). Made with hand tools. I cut the dovetails pretty wide, european style. The top closes by fitting in a rabbet. Still need to make a handle for the top, probably will be walnut.
