I need some help redesigning the layout of my art/craft show booth. I sell Maloof rocking chairs and hardwood cutting boards. How many years am I looking at to dry? - 39 replies
First time ever buying anything on Craigslist I just bought 350 bf of Walnut for $2/bf. All pieces are 8’ long with numerous 1” pieces, 7 2” thick pieces and one 4” thick pieces. All the 2” and 4” still have the bark on them. They were cut a month ago so how many years am I looking at until I can use it?

I am in the process of completing another Maloof rocker and my headrest has developed a small crack in the top. The crack is maybe 2 inches long. I can’t start over with the headrest so what are my options to prevent it from cracking more? Should i fill it with glue and sand the remained off? Chair is made of black walnut.

I was cutting 8/4 Wenge today on my 3HP Sawstop cabinet saw today and it was so hard that it bound up the blade. It took all i could to get the piece off the saw after I stopped the motor. Anyone ever have this happen before?

Air dried vs kiln dried - 7 replies
I recently got a call from my local hardwood mill that they received 2 twelve foot 8/4 black walnut boards (12’ wide) and wanted to know if I was interested. I immediately dropped my tools and raced over there. The manager told me that they were air dried in a barn for the last 10-15 years and he can’t put it in the racks with the ...

Wax for a red oak table? - 3 replies
I am finishing a red oak dinning table that I have been told to use wax on as a final coat. What does the wax do after 2 coats of gloss poly and a coat of gloss varnish (sanded with 320 between poly and varnish coats)? What type of wax? I would like to use my Festool RO 125 FEQ Rotex Sander with a sponge head to apply. What else should I u...

Cherry slab questions - 3 replies
This weekend I was able to visit Hearne Hardwoods in Oxford PA (great place) and I picked up a large 8/4 cherry slab that is roughly 7” long and 2” wide. They had it on sale due to a large knot and some edge rot. I plan on building a coffee table out of the slab and was hoping to do natural edge but I don’t think I can with t...

Help sanding between coats of poly - 9 replies
The first coat of poly is dry on the red oak table that I am building and I need to sand before the next coat to remove any dust particles. I have never sanded between coats of finish before and it makes me nervous. Do I use 400 grit paper and can I use my Dewalt ROS to sand? What do I do after sanding to clean the surface for the next coat? ...

3/4 HP Delta bandsaw keeps bogging down - 7 replies
My 14” Delta 3/4 HP bandsaw seems to never want to cut all the way through lumber without bogging down. My blade is new and this has been happening for over a year. I usually cut 8/4 hardwood which I know contributes to the bogging down but this is ridiculous. The saw is still stock except for the riser block assembly that I installed. ...

Scratches showing through after stain - 9 replies
Let me preface this by saying that I rarely use stain so this might be a rookie mistake that I made. I am staining a red oak table and there are several spots showing up darker than the rest. I also have been noticing several small spots of scratches. I have tried applying a second coat of stain to blend the darker spots but it doesn’...

Oil based finish over a polished surface - 2 replies
I am finishing another Maloof rocker (walnut) and I want to take the finish to the extreme. I currently sand to 400 then burnish to 2000 grit then use a 3 part finish of BLO, Tung oil and Poly. I want to start using felt and then sheep skin after the burnishing to really make the wood shine. Is there an issue with using the 3 part finish over...

Wenge rocking chair - 4 replies
I am thinking of making a new rocking chair as a show piece for art/craft shows and I am leaning towards Wenge. What issues might I face besides cost when working with 8/4 Wenge? I build Maloof style Rocking Chairs utilizing Hal Taylor’s plans. I know that the dust is toxic so I would use a respirator and my dust collection system. I...

Solid wood radiator cover - 1 reply
I have a potential client that has asked if I could build a 36” x 18” radiator bench cover out of cherry. This piece would just sit on top as a bench and I would use 8/4 or 12/4 cherry. Any potential problems I might face? I think I would route out the center so it was still one piece but slips over the radiator.
