Dust Collection PVC or Metal? #1: Quick Survey on Material for Dust Collection parts

Guys

Will be making a short dust collection run, about 20 foot, next week to hook up 3 tools. I’ve seen the comments, seems like metal is the better choice but I plan is to use 4” PVC and ground it with copper wire.

Just wondering, what does your system have? PVC or metal pipes?

Thanks

Holy smokes! #1: When is the last time you cleaned your dust filter canister ?

So I sold my Jet 1100DC and was cleaning it up today for the new owner. The machine has the bar on top to spin the flappers on the inside. Prior to moving it to the driveway, I turned the flappers a few times like I do each week with the machine on. Taking it outside, I removed the bag and started up the leaf blower and started to blow all the dust out. Holy smokes! Shot air from the outside of the machine through the pleats and out the bottom came a PILE of saw dust that just kept on giving. The pile ended up about 8 inches tall and the dust was everywhere. Shot it from the bottom directly into the belly of the beast. Wow, there was so much dust packed into the filter! I always assumed the flappers cleaned the filter! No way! If your machine is not “sucking like it used to” try giving the filter a good cleaning with a leaf blower. Make sure to wear your dust mask ! The whole process took about 5 minutes to just clean the filter, then another 30 minutes to wash the cars.

Laminated Wooden Tops (with and without beaded bases)

Some more tops, these things are addictive. Give one away, everyone wants one.

This next one has the bases, trying a bead on the bases, I think it adds a nice design feature.

The 3rd video shows how easy they are to make (This is Jock Steve A , who is a master turner).

I scored with obtaining a lot of this laminated stock. If anyone needs a source for this type of wood, send me a message and I'll forward you and email address where to buy it.

Fun little project. Has some left over 2”x2” redwood pieces so we jazzed it up with a log cabin feel. Next are some Christmas lights for her.

This is ~ 2’X 2” x 30” and weighs about 100 pounds. Has an elevated deck to get her up above the snow line. We live 60 miles west of NYC so we get a fair amount of snow. Took about 15 hours to build.

A buddy of mine gave me 28 of these wood grain rubber floor mats. These are magic to my feet and legs.

I had the black version as you can see. The wood grain printed ones are so much nicer. They interlock at a level surface and make using a broom and shop vacuum much easier. I put the black ones in about two years ago and feel its the best investment I ever made into the shop. These free ones are not enough to cover the area I need so I still have some black ones as “fill in’s” for now. I found the mats on Amazon and have ordered another 18 for about $75.

Besides being friendly to my feet, they give the shop an entirely different feel to it. Looks a lot better! The black mats are about 3/8” thick, the wood grain are about 1/2” thick.

Woodworking Injuries #1: Broken tendon, .....that's tendon, not tenon

Well, I have to admit this is a new one for me. I’m in the final steps of completing my version of the new fangled workbench and was moving the top, back and forth over the leg assembly. It’s 2’ x 4’ x 2” thick with a 50 pound Craftsman woodworking vise on one end. Weighs about 125 lbs. Never actually picked it up , just moving, flipping it top to bottom, so I could get to the bottom and fit it to the leg assembly base.

Well, low and behold,, I hear a giant BOING sounds from my left elbow. Felt like a 110 volt shock. The arm went weak and I called it a night.

Turns out, I ruptured my bicep tendon, the tendon that connects my muscle to my elbow. Completely snapped like a broken rubber band. Apparently very common for guys between 40 and 60 (I’m 52). The Dr said he never see’s this type of injury with women, I guess the ladies are not stupid enough to move anything so darn heavy. So, at 52, I’ve blown a gasket!. Didn’t even know this could happen. The surgery is later today. 2 weeks in a sling then up to 8 weeks of physical therapy.

Hey older jocks, be careful in the shop. I thought this was heavy but not THAT heavy. Get some help moving stuff

The bench turned out pretty nice , will post this within a week or two.

Later, Bob

I’ve been replacing my old Craftsman style stationary tools and upgrading to more powerful brands. I’ll selling my old (21 years) Inca bandsaw on ebay. 10’ throat, cut about 6 inchs thickness

Well made by the Swiss, I’d love to keep this for a small work and use my new Grizzly for larger resaw work. I’ve been very impressed with the INCA lately. I bought a new timberwolf resaw blade and it sliced through 3” wide oak and cherry, with nice straight cuts- easily.

Here’s the link to ebay, check it out.

Thanks for looking.

I paid $700 for it 20 years ago and would like to see it with a LJ. Bidding starts at $399

LOCAL PICKUP ONLY< NO SHIPPING. Extra blades free with saw.
