« Part 7: Full size roughers Part 8 of wood tick tools series Part 9: Mid size round cutter »

This is a mid size roughing tool that I make that is great for mini/midi lathes. The pen, call, stopper, small bowl and lidded box folks really like this tool. It is made from 3/8” cold rolled 1045 steel and black oxide coated as all my tools are. One end turned round so all you need is a 3/8” hole drilled in the end of the handle that you make to your liking. Working tool length is aprox. 7”

In this pic you can see that I spend a lot of time grinding the tips back for clearance of the cutter, it’s just the way I like to do them, and how I like to use them.

Here they are all ground back and sanded to 220 before they are sent out to black oxide coating.

How the look when I get them back from black oxide coating, they look very nice because I take the time to sand them and clean them up before coating.

Lots of clearance for the cutter on 3 sides, folks are amazed at how much you can do with this one tool. I like to use rounded cutters on all my roughers, it just makes the more versatile.
