Spalted Maple

I went to the Habitat for Humanity on Saturday and saw a stack of lumber on the floor. All you can haul for a dollar a foot. I spotted what looked like spalted maple as it was rough cut lumber about 5/4 and 5-8 inches wide. The longest board is 9 feet.

So this evening I planned it down and look at this!

I really don’t know spalted maple from salty chips, but from what I’ve read and seen pictures of I think it’s maple.

It’s definitely spalted…

Spalting is essentially a mold/fungus that grows in the wood. Different types of mold/fungus produce different colorations of spalting.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like maple to me either, probably douglas fir like Whitewulf said. IMO there isn’t anything wrong with that however…just make sure you wear your respirator when you’re working with it.

If it’s ‘wet’ you will want to let it dry out before you attempt anything with it however. Fine Wood Working has some interesting articles on spalting.

Thanks yall, I knew it was spalted something. I’ll have to break out my wood ID book.
It’s all dry wood, haven’t used the moisture meter on it yet.
It planes like hard wood; doesn’t clog the planner like pine does so it’s hard to tell.
I’ll try and get a better picture later, I’ll hold a board up so you can see it better, it’s mixed in with some PT pine from another project.

It’s just that the other boards in that first picture look like dimensional lumber.

I also think it looks like DougFir. I love working with it..it’s a little sturdier than pine.

Eek, be careful, friend. You don’t want that stuff in your lungs. It looks pretty friable to me but it’s definitely pretty.
