Great project for the kids and you. If you had some 1X you could make shelves similar to the one you have posted. I also like benches from 1 X. They are very simple and fast.

Here is a strong word of advice, small or tiny projects like toys can burn more time by far than a small bench or stool. The toy-like items will use half the materials or even less than a bigger project but consume easily 4x the hours.

I like TreeBones idea because a small stool that a kid can sit or stand on is still portable. I don’t know the situation but if it is left unpainted or finished then it can be a classroom art project to paint it.

I am writing this from experience.

My mom happened to have a grandchild project that was painted in the classroom and given as a gift. Something like this might be a good idea or at least get the creative process going.

LJ Karson gets involved with making toys and could probably give some great advice. http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/Karson

Stools are a good idea, the kids can personalize them and can watch TV, use to brush their teeth in the bathroom, or help get to shelves in their room. I made about ten for my daughters Brownie troop, many of the girls had them years later.
