Several days ago Danúm posted a question asking if Pres Obama should give NKorean Dictator UN a phone call. Several of us answered honestly in a way that was not as humorous as was the nature of the question. Soon, the question and all discussion disapeared from the site. There were some complaints about the political nature of the discussion and I can understand that but to simply censor something without explanation is an unusual action in this society. Any complaint that I might have about this incident is not about the posting as I am by nature not a poiitical zealot and mine was just a quick answer to an interesting question. My issue is this. If political disscussion is not allowed on the site, then why is it that every time I change pages, I am seeing POLITICALLY BASED questions about Gay marriage and gun control as lures to the NewsMax page? I’m guessing that like many other things these days we decide if something is acceptable or not by whether or not there is a buck to be made doing it…........Joe

I did not see Danum’s post and if it was removed because of its content the administrators should explain why. I agree with you Joe why is some political issues are ok and some not, but its ok to advertise a political issue. Right now to the right of your post is a poll for gun control. I wonder if the door company and roofing contractor mind sharing space with a political poll?

I did not see Danum’s post but I have no problem with the site administrators deleting a political post from this ” Lumberjocks” blog site. I for one don’t care to read what some other Jock thinks about politics here and abroad. You let one in and the next thing you know it spreads and then soon name calling begins etc. etc. etc. The posts on the side >>>> are most likely paid ads and they finance this site so that we don’t need to. You know how it gets when folks start talking religion and politics. Just my humble opinion.

I love the Lumberjocks web site. I come here because we share a common interest…woodworking. I see all levels of woodworking projects here and I can always learn something new, be inspired, see others accomplishments, laugh, share, and interact with other woodworkers. I personally don’t care to see the ads promoting whatever the hot topic on the news happens to be. I also don’t care if you’re for or against any of these topics. I come here to get away from those issues and unwind and enjoy the topic of woodworking. So thanks for being a great woodworking site and let’s leave the “issues” at the door.

Bingo Bogey Guy! I don’t admin this site, and so I am just taking a shot in the dark. But typically the ads you see on the side of the page are driven by your viewing habits on the computer, your demographic information, sites you visit, searches you conduct, etc.

Right now I am looking at a video game advertisement, I doubt that the owners of the video game paid Lumberjocks directly to advertise on their site…rather, I believe they subscribe to an ad service that pays lumberjocks, and cycles their clients through the site.

If you click below the ad where it says ‘All Advertiseers’ you can see what I am talking about.

This site is moderated irregularly at best. Some political threads will go on for pages and other will get yanked within hours. If you’re wanting consistent, even-handed moderation, Lumberjocks is not the site for you.

I love this site. In the past made I made a mistake answering a post and someone getting mad at me. I found out one member Blocked 50 members because they didn’t feel the government should have so much influence in gun control.

The reason I’m here is woodworking so now I don’t bother with those controversial post.

However you bring up a great point, if no politics are allowed or being deleted why is there a Gun Control ad on the top of this very website every day for the last week.?

Kreegan-

You do realize that moderation is by what, two people, one of whom is almost on the other side of the planet? If people aren’t flagging the thread, it doesn’t make the moderators radar, which means it’s probably OK, in terms of belligerence. Just sayin’.

Ken- Firefox is your answer. No more ads.

I tend to avoid most of the polictical discussions. But there are some interesting off-topic discussions occassionally so
I do click on them out of curiosity.

A little about ads….

A few years back another site I visit regularly was being hit by malware disquised as ads. A solution was to install AdBlock. AdBlock is a free extension availble for free for most popular browsers.

I highly recommend it. As others have said many of the ads are cookie based upon sites you frequent. Some are site sponsored ads. Either way, with AdBlock you can browse your favorite sites without ads showing up.

Thanks Ron. Just wanted to pass along that ever since I mentioned the words “G-n Kontrl” earlier, That poll question follows me to every page I go to on LJs. I would be interested in how many other Jocks see it constantly? I imagine that voting thing is NOT a good thing to do in the cookie realm?.........;-J
