starting my kitchen cabinets

Blog entry by woodchic posted 87 days ago 996 reads 0 times favorited 79 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Hi everybody…....My husband finally got the floor finished…...he did a fantastic job I might add and now…..I finally sucked up enough courage to get started on my kitchen cabinets. The kitchen and dining area is 14 ft wide x 24.6 ft long. My cabinets are made of plywood and my face frames and doors are made out of hickory. I have never worked on a set of kitchen cabinets before, so I am pretty much learning this on my own. I have a friend on here that gives me advice when I ask…..he is very kind in telling me how to do things correctly. I hired a guy to do my cut list and plans for my kitchen….now I just have to cut and put everything together…........so I believe moral support is very important for this project….... I will be posting pictures of my progress. Wish me luck

Looks good so far Robin.. The flooring looks great and I love the walls.. Are you going to cover that beautiful log wall with cabinets??

I amcurrently making a dresser for my son out of hickory.. Its a hard, beautiful wood..

Looking forward to seeing your pictures and the progress..I know you can tackle this one just fine..

You can do it!!! Just look at it like a big blank canvas. You can do one cabinet at a time so as not to get too intimidated by the size of the project. The corner cabinet is a great start. Make sure the first cabinet is hung plumb and the rest will follow easily.
I am sure you can get any questions answered on this forum.
Please keep posting updates.

Good Luck, John

I made my vanaties….....but kitchen cabinets there seems to be alot more to it…....I just recently found out what a scribe was, and that was only because I was making my cuts for my cut list and I asked a gentleman on here what it was. Thank you for your kind words and faith in my abliity.

Hi Randal, Thanks so much…......Yes I am going to cover the walls with cabinets…...but only in the kitchen the dining room will remain open and it has an open ceiling from the floor to the top it is 24ft, so there will be plenty of log walls to see. Hickory is a beautiful wood…...but boy is it hard on the planer blades!! I can’t wait to see your finished piece you are working on for your son!!

Robin,

Looking great so far. Hope Hubby is as happy with your work as you are with his job on the floor. Keep up the great work.

By the way, smart move by starting in the corner with an upper cabinet. Just like a PRO!

Good luck on the build, Robin. I am a firm believer that too much wood cannot be put into a home. With the wood flooring, walls and exposed beams I am sure you will do just fine with your cabinets.

Spectacular room size and we can all see the logs there on outside walls. I think we will all follow this as you do the work. Remember according to the National Electrical Code that the boxes for the receptacles and switches are supposed to be mounted within 1/8 of an inch to the finished surface. There is also a minimum of two 20 amp circuits required for the kitchen alone. I would also keep them separate from the lighting circuits, that way you won’t be in the dark if a circuit is tripped off handling something hot. Any receptacles within 18 inches of a sink must have GFCI protection. I don’t know what your local codes are but what ever they are I would exceed them with a well designed layout. You will do just fine I am sure.

Hi Richard! Thanks so much for the good AND important information. I think we got everything right, I just wish we would have put a few more outlets in…...when we went up with the logs we had to put the electrical in as we went. I did the floor plan myself, and I have never worked with electricity before, you learn with a log home as you go it seems. But, all and all, it was not a bad job, the only thing I regret is….... I wish I would have put a couple more outlets in my kitchen. Be sure to drop back by and check on me.

Robin …..

That’s going to be a great looking kitchen and home …. I’m envious! When did you start (broke ground) and when do you hope to finish? I like the concept of both log walls and drywall …. a much nicer look overall than just logs (usually too dark in the interior).

Keep the pic’s coming …

Hi Ray! thank you. We started May of 2004. We are still not moved in. It has been a long time in coming. By the time I get my cabinets in, we should be ready to move in. Everything won’t be done but, I don’t think I can take another 3 months before we move in. I am more than ready to make the move. Yes, I chose to do the dry wall because in my opinion also, it does break all the wood up. I wasn’t sure when I painted the wallls in the kitchen what color I wanted so I chose a very pale yellow, if it doesn’t look right I will repaint it later. The rest of the house, for the bedrooms I did each one in a different color of red, they turned out beautifully. My daughter of course chose a purple, I wasn’t too happy about her color choice, but now that we have it decorated it doesn’t look bad at all.

Love the room, you will do well, I would like to make a suggestion, I do not know a great deal about the expansion and contraction of logs, but as I remember they do swell and shrink and as I remember you had to make allowances for the windows and door framing. You might consider using hanging cletes for the cabinets, the ones where you fasten a strip to the wall and a mating strip to the cabinet, so the cabinet hangs on the clete and can be moved right or left. so if the wall moves or swells the cabinet allows for the movement. This also makes leveling easy. you still fasten the cabinets to one another but not to the wall, they just hang as a unit. Just an Idea, I’ve had great luck with it. I take a 1×6 and rip it down the center at a 45 degree angle up edge on the wall down edge on the cabinet, kinda makes a hook I then ad another strip accross the bottom, it does bring them out from the wall 3/4” this sometimes gives me a place to run some low voltage wires for lights underneath.

Hi Robin,

I fully agree with all the previous encouraging Jocks’ technical comments…
However, I want to add my subjective comment too. You should know that this whole project – a log house made by yourselves – is an unreal dream for us Brazilians. We can only see log houses in foreign pictures or in movies since the Brazilian houses are always built in masonry, due to our Portuguese national tradition.
Also, the Brazilian culture has an awful discrimination against the ones who perform handjobs.

Therefore, I envy you and your husband and I also wish your lives will become much more cheerful as soon as you start baking some delicious applepies in your kitchen.

Sincere congratulations!

Ooooohhh!!! This is a project that is on my radar. I’ll be watching ;)

Looks like you started in the right place, according to the books…. right in the corner. I put up some cheap cabinets in my laundry room and the handiest thing I find to have around is someone who can see square. I simply can’t anymore (I was great at it 20 years ago…). My boyfriend is amazing at it. Hopefully your husband is good at that too.
