There have been some recent wood pricing posts, so thought I would share what I paid yesterday at a yard in Asheville, NC. They are well respected by trade & craft people. Gennett Lumber. Prices per board ft for 4/4 stock, I was targeting on 6” width. Walnut $5.50Cherry $4,00Wormy Maple (some might say spalted or ambrosia) $2.50 ...

Transfer image to wood - Question - 17 replies

I’ve seen some info on tracing the image/drawing to wood by using black carbon paper. I’ve also found that there is white carbon type paper. But most references seem to be using it on fabric. I’m thinking this might be something good me to use on walnut. Has anyone tried it & if so any “brand” that seems to wor...

Hook & Loop for Drum Sander - 7 replies

I have the Grizzly G0716 drum sander & while it’s more for light duty, it works fine for me… except I dread having to change the sand paper. I find it really difficult to get the last of the roll into the tension slot/clamp. While Grizzly has a hook & loop conversion for some of larger drum sanders, nothing for this one.H...

Question on Carter B/S blades - 9 replies

I received an email from Carter today that they have 15% off their B/S & Lathe accessories through April 26th. Their B/S blades appear to be a little pricey ( about $24.50), but discount would help. I have their guides & stabilizer (like them), but haven’t used their blades. I primarily use 1/8” to 1/4”. Any though...

I'm not a shill, but - 0 replies

I’m on a distribution list for this auction house since it’s so close to me (just north of Asheville NC), and I wanted to share the info I got in case anyone in East TN or Western NC wanted to go. I believe they have absentee & phone bids, but tough to bid without seeing the items/lots in person. Don’t think I’ve e...

Fantastic Transportation Museum - 4 replies

We just returned from a road trip to Maine (our 1st visit to that area) & found a real gem of a museum that I wanted to pass along if you’re ever in that area. It’s the Owls Head Transportation Museum located on the coast of Maine between Portland & Bar Harbor. They have an incredible collection of restored aircraft, autos, t...

Re-sawing fence? - 4 replies

I’m going to finally order a wood slicer blade for my Rikon 10-325 so I can re-saw wood into thinner pieces. The absolute max height of the wood would be 8”. I know that the existing Rikon saw fence really doesn’t work for me for several reasons, height being one. So I want to buy (not make) one for this purpose. I do hav...

Ultra Duster & Arm R Seal - 9 replies

I’ve been using Arm R Seal as the finish on my boxes for over a year, probably because of comments by Charles Neil. Anyway, I really like it but found I had a problem after using some that I had a skim covering over the liquid after re-opening the can. Now granted I was probably doing everything wrong – using from the can, dumping ...

Feedback on box design - 11 replies

I’m doing some valet boxes for nephews & would like feedback on the design. Attached photos shows how I cut out the top to allow 2 separate areas… the smaller one for change, keys, etc. Larger one for wallet, cell phone or what ever. Before I continue on finishing this one & starting the others, thought I ask for suggestions ...

New Glue - anyone used it? - 11 replies

Latest issue of Woodworker’s Journal mentioned Nexabond 2500 glue in the “What’s In Store” section of the magazine. I was wondering if anyone has used it & has comments. I thought it might have uses for me such as attaching wood pulls to my boxes. Thanks! Here’s the Bioformix site

Grizzly G0716 sander feedback - 5 replies

I’ve looked at the reviews and cannot find anything current on the Grizzly G0716 sander. Evidently there were issues early on, but if it’s a good unit it would fit my requirements. I’m mainly doing smaller items (boxes) do not foresee a need for large capacity (more than 8” width or 36” length – at most). Nor ...

White Walnut? - 7 replies

I was picking up some wood today from local mill & was looking for some more walnut. Said all they had at present in the kiln was “white walnut”. Since I didn’t have a clue what that was, asked more & sawyer’s wife told me she understood it is also called “butternut”.Quick search seems to indicate that...

New Reality Show - 2 replies

Okay – here’s my idea for a good reality show…. The Kardashian Family versus the Robertson Family (Duck Dynasty) on Survivor. Only problem might be that it wouldn’t go too many episodes. First I thought – have them compete on Family Feud, but this would be better. A great Father’s Day gift!

Wood crack issue - 5 replies

I’m doing several BS boxes & have one that has a crack that I’m concerned may allow a chunk to break off. I’d hate to lose the box since the wood is so nice.
