A number of supporters of the Wildlife Center of Virginia (Waynesboro) knew about the 5 foot bear carving generously donated by Jim Calder, Jr. to WCV for their 2013 Gala auction on November 16. When the carving was transported to the Center a number of people had the same idea – that precious bear belongs at the Center. After all – it has been the year of the bears at the Wildlife Center in 2013 (they are now providing food for 17 bears to be released to the wild mid-January). With so many having the same idea it was decided to combine bids and bid as one on the statue – fondly referred to as “Randy Bear”. A total of 54 donors – a collective effort by a variety of WCV supporters new and old – managed to raise $6,900.00 to bid on “Randy Bear”. After much scheming the bear carving is now an official resident of the Wildlife Center of Virginia – the group won the carving and donated it to the Center that evening. Even a full size photo cut-out of Dr. Dave McRuer examining “Randy Bear” was auctioned off and raised an additional $400 for the Center. A warm thank you to Mr. Calder whose generous act grew to mean so much to so many.
