Part 1: Ultimate ball chuck

My small TAIG lathe can be used for metal turning. So I decided to build ultimate ball chuck from aluminum (my previous chucks) Here is result of my creation. Work in progress:All starts with the drawing two chucks to fit 2” and 1.5” balls. The idea is the same as shown by Mike here .I was given small peaces of aluminum from the scrap pile..Two blanks turned and cut to size, ready for face plate.Back on the lathe but this time mounted with face plate instead of regular chuck....

Part 2: Tool bit

The idea is to do holes and internal cuts with just one tool. Here is what I did:5/8 spade bit is painted black to make a drawing on it..Made all the cuts with dremel using cut-off disks. On left is a tool holder (was a bit a challenge to make it from steal).one cutting side.other side.left side of the tool has cutting edge on the bottom.Centering the tool. .First cut almost as deep as 2 inch.view of the “undercut” after i made a few holes. Hopefully the end result will be show...

Part 3: Making first hole

I’ve got everything i need to make a first hole. I used some video here, advertisings are not mine, they are part of blip.tv – video hosting web site, sorry… I have some liquid grip leftover, so I used it on the chuck instead of double side tape.!!Aligning the radius turning jig.Setting the other axis .!!Visual inspection.Measuring the depth bit has to dive in..!!Making first hole..Hole made on the end grain side of the ball.Close look.Two holes.I did not do any sandin...
