Trying to decide on first (maybe only) handplane - 31 replies
I’m trying to decide between a jack plane (15”) and a jointer plane (22”). I do not have another hand plane and I do not have an electric jointer. The immediate need I have is that I need to flatten and smooth a 15×60” slab and my thickness planer maxes at 12.5”. Plus, I also know a thickness planer isn̵...

Epifanes + accelerator....shelf life? - 2 replies
So I have epifanes clear varnish and woodfinish matte. I also have some accelerator. If the varnishes are thinned (maybe that doesn’t matter) and I add the accelerator, about what kind of life do I have for this mixture before it goes bad? I’ve never used this before but I think it is sortof like Japan dryer. At first, I was thin...

Hello all,I am wrapping up my first project with walnut, which is two nightstands. My wife is already wanting me to work on a bed now. I want to use walnut and possibly another wood for contrast. Anyway, I guess I am ok wit...

What varnish for the home varnish/oil mix? - 6 replies
HelloI have read a lot about home mixes of varnish, oil, and solvent. Usually in the 1:1:1 ratio or thereabout. I also understand the tung vs blo difference as well as solvent selection. What I’m not sure about is which varnish to use. Regular interior polyurethane is available anywhere, as is spar urethane. I can get a non urethane v...

Does this exist? Every compact router I have seen will accept 1/4” bits and some will even take 3/8” (not that I’ve ever seen those bits sold anywhere), but I cannot find a compact router that will take 1/2” bits. This is important to me because almost all my bits are 1/2”. Thanks for any help.

Ridge Carbide 40 vs 48 tooth TS2000 - 4 replies
Good morning, I am trying to decide between the ridge 40 and 48 tooth (ultra) blades for my 3650 ridgid saw. Either would be in the 3/32 kerf. Having never seen these blades in person, I’m hoping someone here could shed some insight on differences. The 40 tooth has raker teeth that might give a flat enough bottom to allow the blade t...
