Box Building #4: Light Box Tweak

08-19-2011 04:00 PM by Kent Shepherd | 6 comments »

I updated my light box to make the lights more adjustable. The rods simply slip into the holes on the sides.I found an extra piece of an old stand for the top light. I bent it in my vice and screwed to my existing bracket. I think it is self explanatory, but ask if you have questions.

The 30 minutes MaFe chisel plane - blog.

05-28-2011 03:14 PM by mafe | 41 comments »

The 30 minutes MaFe chisel plane. It gets short for all of us one day… I have seen plenty of different versions of the so called ‘chisel plane’, and all had the same problem for me – they simply took too long, and was too complex to make compared to then just making a real hand plane right off. Why make a chisel plane?1. I can’t afford different – that is a good idea then to make one.2. I have a hand plane but could use a ‘plane’ for cleaning up ...

Easy. Elegant Wooden Box Hinge #1: I could kick myself

06-23-2011 07:26 AM by shipwright | 61 comments »

A few months ago I spent many many hours trying to perfectly align a set of “box joint hinges” for my project ” A Little Cabinetree” After I finally got them working I installed them on the edges of the MDF sides and doors and then veneered over the whole works. The only good part was that there were enough left over prototype parts that I could make a hinge for my next project from the cast-offs Then this week I was making a tea box for a friend and when...

Danish beauty moves to South Africa

01-15-2011 09:48 PM by Div | 13 comments »

She actually came quite some time ago. It was love at first sight for me and I wanted it to be more than just a fling. I was after a permanent relationship but how could I be sure? What about the culture shock? It must be very hard to give up a comfortable life in the culture rich Old World and contemplate an uncertain future in a little Third world country at the very bottom of darkest Africa; strange people speaking strange languages living strange lives, wide open spaces with dangerous ...

Machinist Toolbox #10: Wrapping it up - Lee Valley Style

12-29-2010 07:51 PM by PurpLev | 8 comments »

Not much to say, nor anything to show in this post. Just received the locking hardware from Lee Valley which was the last thing I needed to finish this build at this point. I thought about making the locking set myself, but seeing the set LV offers it just didn’t make any sense so I just ordered it from them with the Free Shipping they offer this week. arrived in 2 days and installed today – very nice set, and works like a charm. The set I got is this one: And can be foun...

This is going to be a first for me… off to the timber show in Launceston, Tasmania, in 2 weeks… I have never been to Tasmania and am really looking forward to dropping in on one of the world’s greatest timber growing regions… and home of some of the world’s best wood craftsmen…. I hope to meet up with some of them and swap ideas.. And speaking of timbers…Check here Tasmanian Blackwood [one of my favourites.] Myrtle, Huon Pine, King William Pine,...
