1x12x12 Box Challenge-15

Yes, another box!

I got to thinking… this is really very close to the 2×4x96 build…

I have been wanting to build another box anyway… I really liked the others… and I wanted another one… a little bigger this time…

Overall:

9” x 11-7/8” x 5”

Before Shots:

I forgot to take the Before pictures…
... remembered to do it after I had resawed one slice…
... I think this will pass…

I made this out of Walnut scraps from a Sam Maloof chair that I’m in the process of doing (slowly).

I learned a lot on this box!

My first resaw of a 12×12 piece… To me, BAD IDEA!
This was my first experience using a Woodslicer bandsaw blade… Sure is nice… a MUCH SMOOTHER CUT!

I would have been better off slicing them into smaller pieces like 6” and resawed and gluing back together!
... BUT we managed to get through it…
... I don’t think there is one side the same thickness! LOL
... BUT, they’re same desired sizes on the outside!
... talk about Woodworking… this was Wood WORKing… LOL

Construction was straight forward… made the whole box then cut the top off on the band saw.

Hope you like it…

I love it and it’s being put to good use!

I have more pictures that will go into a Blog… later… Stay tuned…

The Stumpy contest ended about a month ago… this box was short by about 3 hours of meeting the contest deadline.

Finishing: BLO, Garnet dewaxed shellac, Deft spray can Lacquer Gloss… I will use this box for 3×5 cards & other misc items.

It is very hard to Finish a 2×4 to make it look like Poplar, etc.!

The center divider was removed because it’s not going to be used for 3×5 cards.

This is for my wife, Deanne, who likes Unicorns.

Box #2

Yes, it’s past the deadline and does NOT count…

BUT, I made both boxes at the same time out of the same 2×4…

I just could not get Both of them finished to the point of getting them Entered.

So, this is here just to look at… LOL

It was fun! ... and a challenge!

Stumpy’s Tubafore Contest Entry - 2x4 3x5 Box

Well, I finally was able to get it ALMOST done… enough for a good idea, anyway.

Actually, I am making TWO of these boxes… I couldn’t get BOTH of them done to this point… So, I just got One done.

They will be used for 3×5 cards… and other misc. stuff until the room is needed for 3×5’s.

11” x 8-1/2” x 4-1/2

Was made from one 2×4 x 8’ Kiln dried from Home Depot.

Sides & ends are about 1/4” thick while the Top & Bottom are 3/8”

I still have a little more Finish sanding to do.

I will start with Mineral Oil or BLO… maybe some Shellac & Topped with lacquer.
Maybe I’ll Finish box #1 differently from Box #2.

I gotta say this 2×4 wood isn’t anywhere like Poplar, Oak, etc.
That grain makes it a whole new challenge.

I wish I had been able to seriously start it sooner!

Edit:
1-23-12 Added another Project… Box #2…

Mailbox Steps Saver Alert

Well, I’ve been planning on doing this small project for some time…

Actually, I am improving on another project that needs to be upgraded.

Thus, making another project…

It ALL uses SCRAP materials & thus far has not used any wood UNTIL NOW!
The White Wooden Dowel at the rear of the mailbox has some Orange stringers attached to it…
It Holds the main ALERT Flag.

The basic project is a modification to our mailbox so that we can SEE, from the House, whether or NOT the Mail HAS COME OR NOT… saving all of the steps to go out there and find that it has not come yet.
(and when uses a cane, it can be a problem)

So here it is…

Pieces are somewhat Balanced in place… and when activated, go OUT OF BALANCE.

.

Here is a Slide Show…

Book-Magazine Case

My father-in-law, Dean H. Prewitt (deceased) of Joshua Tree, CA, designed and made a large built-in unit like this. This was back in the late 70’s. I always really liked it because Magazines could also be displayed as well as Books. I finally reverse engineered it, drew plans, added a face frame which included the shelves (he left shelf edges open).

I changed the overall dimensions to fit a small entertainment center I’ve been working on, in the design stage.

I plan on having two of these Book-Mag cases… one on each side of the entertainment console (still in design stage). The second case is in process… just like this one…

Dimensions: 7’5” x 2’ x 1’
Top, bottom, sides, & shelves are 3/4 cab. grade Birch ply.
Back is 1/4” Poplar ply.
Face Frame is 3/4 Poplar.

Dyed with Trans-Tint, Golden Brown (closest match to Dad’s), and topped with Shellac.

Plaque was made by Leo D. Voisine of E. Freetown, MA

Hope you like it…

I would like any criticisms you may have.
