Stanley #4

I paid $8 for this plane at a local pawn shop. At first I thought it was a new plane that just got left in the rain. Then I noticed it says Stanley, Bailey and #4. It wasn’t bright blue like the new ones I’ve seen at Lowes etc., so I got a little excited. After taking it apart I think it actually is a newer plane. I hope it will make a nice smoother for me.

Its too bad Stanley insists on diminishing the Bailey name by continuing to use it.

Reminds me of a blog about a hand plane shoot out between LV Veritas, new Stanley, etc and they threw in an old Stanley to boot.

The old Stanley won. Stanley was so happy about the win they contacted the author for a copy of the article, and was then informed that it was the 80 year old plane that won. The new one got last place.

I think I have this same plane. I’ve upgraded mine with a Lie-Nielsen chip breaker and Hock blade. I use it nearly everyday. This is a good all round plane. Tune up the blade and chip breaker you have and it will still be a good plane. Congrats on the good buy.
