No Bandsaw, yet

Son and I did a recon on buying a bandsaw to add to the shop. I am thinking at least a 14” one so I can resaw and bookmatch for boxes. No luck at all so far as what I am looking for and what I want to spend don’t line up. Sears Craftsman looks like a tinker toy, the delta at a tool shop is too expensive and has a crappy table and no fence. I am trying to avoid just buying a cheap one and making do as it usually turns out frustrating and more expensive.
Will have to keep scoping out Craig’s list I guess or I could promise my soul to the devil to win the Laguna saw in August from the promo on LJ.

Scott, Craigslist is generally a good place to keep an eye out. It took me a few months when I was thinking about one and a number of misses on craigslist and yardsales but I finally scored one. As I am sure you already know, older Craftsman are much nicer then newer ones.

Good luck with the search and hope to see you posting a bandsaw project here soon.

Thanks for the comments guys:)
Craig’s list is really hit and miss. I also don’t have a ton of spare time to run around looking, but will try to stay patient and see what comes my way.
There is a lovely Laguna 18” for sale in my neighbourhood on Craig’s…my wife rolled her eyes when I showed her :(
“but honey there would be no shipping and I would never have to buy another bandsaw again” Didn’t work, crash and burn

I have had good luck with craigslist. I bought my jet cab saw and a couple of PC routers there, within a reasonable drive, and have not once deadheaded back to the shop. Takes some time, spent a couple of months before the table saw came up. But saved 1800 bucks over a new one and it works great. There are some great deals out there, just make sure that you communicate well with the seller, and if the seller does not want to communicate “run Forrest run” and understand what they are selling, and look at all the pics before you do the road trip.

Craigslist is a great option if you can wait.
I waited over 6 months for my drum sander to present itself.
It was worth the wait !!
Keep looking,

Lisa

Holy smokes.
You start reading review and experiences and things get interesting.
For example, some troubles with Laguna’s customer service

Nothing to go see on Craig’s list yet.
I hate to say it but I may go new as there seems to be a lot of junk out there and I am worried about buying someone else’s problematic hard to adjust bandsaw.
I am leaning towards a Delta, however will stay patient and wait a month or so for some rebate $ that is coming my way.

I have a Grizzley 14” extreme. I’ve never regreted buying it. Put a 3t blade in it when I bought it and it resaws great.

Second recon to same tool store, but talked with a different guy. He was pushing a Steel city BS with granite lower wheel and granite table…I asked about a riser kit and he says no?? This is the best model $890.
They had two Delta models but he said the SC was better at this price and accessories and that the new ones will be over $1k so I better hurry as he has sold 40 and only has 11 left…...
This sounded like a sales pitch to get rid of obsolete stock so I kindly bailed on the conversation. I am in Canada and it seems we have fewer options than you guys in the States. My Home Depot has nothing in it for bandsaws as some responses have suggested.
Also looking at a 14” King Canada that I can get riser kit for and fence would be less than the delta or SteelCity.
I wish they would keep making equipment in North America and/or force offshore companies to be transparent about where stuff is made.
Search is still on :)

You know, one of the fun things about a website like this is you get such great advice from a bunch of people who are into the same hobby and have gone through looking for/purchasing good equipment.
I am so much more informed and know what I am looking for so the sales pitches and BS just don’t touch me. I won’t impulse buy. I would not have the frustrating and dangerous Craftsman saw I suffer with if I found LJ’s a couple years ago.
Just e-mailed a guy about a 14” Grizzly “the Cadillac of band saws” he called it on Craig’s. Hmmm, we shall see.
Thank you all so much for the information and reviews on LJ’s, the volume of knowledge here is awesome.
