YABF (yet another brain fart) (sigh) - 22 replies

As I was getting ready to glue the cabinet sides up I remembered that I hadn’t cut a dado for the back. Got that done without issues (I thought). As I was glueing the sides up I realized that I had cut dados on the front stiles as well as the back. Now I have another patch job tomorrow. Seems like I have a major brain fart like this about ...

Starter set of Bandsaw blades - 9 replies

What band saw blade widths will get almost all work done? I do a bit of resawing and the rest is pretty much “normal” work. I plan to get them from Highland Hardware unless people recommend other places to look at.

Bread / cutting boards with checks in the wood - 5 replies

I have some oak I that has fairly extensive checking (or chequeing (for our “across the pond” friends) in it. Is it suitable for making into bread / cutting boards or should I let it sit for a furniture project (which won’t be soon since I’m doing walnut furniture now)? The checks are throughout the boards throughout the ...

harbor freight quick clamps?? - 17 replies

I was looking at Dewalt and Irwin quick clamps at Big Tool Store in Derby KS. (local family owned – non chain—I highly recommend it) and couldn’t stomach the price. I then looked online at the Harbor Freight quick clamps and they’re really imexpensive compared to the name brands. Has anyone used the Harbor Freight variet...

Panel type for bathroom cabinet - 15 replies

I’m making a new walnut bathroom cabinet. If I didn’t have any lumber I’d buy 1/4” plywood for the cabinet panels (10.5×26.25). However I have enough lumber that I can resaw / surface to make the panels out of solid wood. I know that moisture / movement could be a problem but will it? I had planned to use mortise an...

Pull suggestions for small box - 8 replies

I’m making a small box with a flesh fitting lid and would like suggestions on some sort of a pull. Maybe I need to carve a thumbnail in to the top if that’s the case which side do you think is better top or bottom? Or is there a better way to do it all together? I have attached a picture of the top opened a way.

Checks in wood - 3 replies

I have small checks in walnut that won’t seem to go away no matter how much planing sanding or scraping I do. Also the other is a definite change in wood tone and texture. Both are highlighted. Ideas? Thanks

Removing stain from cedar - 3 replies

Our metal deck chairs stained the new (unfinished) cedar deck that was just built. Bleach and detergent didn’t touch the stain. Any suggestions on how to remove them, besides sanding? Thanks!

Laguna 14 12 blade guide wheel loose - 0 replies

I’ve had my Laguna bandsaw for ~2 yrs. now. The blade guide wheel has always had a lot of vertical play in it, so much so that the guide doesn’t move or falls to the table. I can’t see any way to adjust it. I’m wondering if it could be a manufacturing or part problem. Here’s a poor video of the problem. The set scre...

NYC visit -- woodworking places to see - 1 reply

Cross posted this in hand tools forum also (apologies)We’ll soon be going to NYC. I plan on stopping by Brooklyn Tool and Craft (yipee) and probably buy more than I should. Where else should I go that woodworking related (stores, museums …)?

differences between Denatured Alcohol brands - 7 replies

This should probably be an FAQ. Is there any real difference between using a DA from a big box store that has 40-60% Ethanol vs one that has ~90%? I’ve decided to branch out from the “big Z” and mix my own. I’ll only mix enough to use so I won’t be storing it for a long period.

staining red oak with lots of sapwood - 4 replies

The oak I’m using to build a bed has large portions of sapwood along with the heartwood. In order to even out the stain between both should I use a sealer (.5 to 1 shellac) prior to staining or grain filler? Having an even stain coat is more important than a glossy smooth suface. If grain filler is the answer I probably have to add the sta...

shellac seal coat screw up? - 1 reply

I tell y’all what—ya jest gotta be thinkin all the time—no matter how simple/trivial ya think tonights task is. :) I was putting a seal coat on oak panels before staining and grabbed the wrong can of shellac. I used a 3lb cut instead of diluting it. I’ve scraped & sanded most of it off. Should I: 1. try to get (...

attaching top cap to head/foot board - 5 replies

really dumb question. I’m building a simple bed that has a board as the cap on the head and foot board. Is gluing it enough to attach it to the legs and top rail or is something more needed? I suppose biscuits could be used but that seems iffy for alignment. I should know this.

handmade panels to replace plywood - 11 replies

May be the wrong forum—point me in the right direction if so.I have the wood, I have the tool ( a Laguna 1212 bandsaw), and might have the skill.I’m making a bed and thought I’d use handmade panels instead of the normal crappy plywood. I thought about veneering but decided against that. The panels are fairly small ~ 15×24 ...

Buying wood by the pound? - 4 replies

I found this auction on Craigs list.’t quite know what to make of it or how much to offer. I suppose the wood is dry assuming they haven’t puffed up the ad. Googling suggests ~3.3lbs/bd.ft so maybe I’ll go up to 1.25 lb = $4 bd.ft. Thoughts? WALNUT LUMBER(Approx. 35,000...

tilting desktop hardware - 1 reply

Anyone have good ideas/source for a tilting desktop (drafting/architects) hardware? Web search didn’t yield much. I could do a home brew setup with sawtooth support but would consider buying hardware if it’s available. He also wants storage along with it. Plans would be a bonus but I can draw those up myself. I;m more interested in ...
