I’m more than happy to see all the work that’s being done on the LJ.com site. It gets better and better everyday. However, I’m going to give some negative feedback just this once. Personally, I liked the old layout of the forums page much more than the current one. I liked being able to scan down to just the forum areas that I was interested in. It was nice and easy to skip over threads that didn’t spark my interest. For example, it used to be really easy for me to skip the topics in the sweatin’ for bucks category (since I don’t sell anything). I have nothing against those forums. I just liked being able to find my favorite areas really quickly.

Any chance the layout could be some sort of user preference?

Thanks for the feedback, Joshua. No worries about posting negative feedback ;)

As the number forums grows the forums list containing 3-5 most recent topics would get too long. So I was thinking that it’s better to provide forums quick links at the top of the main forums page so you can quickly go directly to the forum that interests you. Plus forums jumper works in similar way.

Isn’t it better to have quick access to the forum that you want to check instead of scrolling on the main forums page to find it? I may be wrong ;)

If the number of forums goes up, you’re right, it would be a long page. What I liked about the old layout was that I got the most recently active topics without navigating to another page.

Have you considered making it so users could go to a page containing only their favorite forums. For an example, I would refer you to forum.java.sun.com, but you would have to get an account and setup your favorites. When I login, I go straight to a “My Forums” page which contains my favorite few forums. There are 76 current forums at forum.java.sun.com, so going straight to a listing with all of them is rarely useful. Many of them cover topics that only select group of people are interested in.

Anyway, whatever you think works best is great. Keep up the great work. (And look for my new posting with yet another feature idea. I love web programming, so I’m always thinking about new features that I would enjoy.)

I like “My Forums” idea – adding it to the “To Be Considered” list ;)

Martin I think it is better to have quick access to the forums that i want to check. I like your current forum page better than the last.
