Topic tags/keywords: bowl turning jet 1221 lathe question

I am really want to get in to bowl turning, but have a really crappy low end harbor freight lathe. I have a $1200 budget and was looking at the jet 1221 vs simply because I can crank the speed down. My current lathe turns WAY to fast for me to feel safe turning bowls. Any advice? I’m not married to any label and just want something thatw willtake me from hobby to beyond if I decide I want to keep at it. Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about the lathe in question.

Just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to LumberJocks!

I don’t see any reason the Jet would not be a good fit so long as you don’t intend to turn anything over 12”. I have never turned on one, but I have some acquaintances who own them and are quite happy with them. Do a Google search for ‘Jet 1221VS Reviews’ ... most give it 5 stars and only a few negatives.

I bought a Delta 46-460 midi 4 years ago, and have been pretty happy with it. However, I have been taking classes (on PM3520b lathes) and am starting to do some bigger stuff. Long story short, I have a Nova 20” lathe on order and will soon be selling the Delta.

Hello, and welcome. Look on Youtube, I believe there is video where the Jet and Grizzly are compared side by side. The guy in the video owns both and gives the pros and cons of each. Maybe that my help you make your decision. Good luck and on your purchase.

Have your say...
