I love craigslist.

A guy in a town 30 miles from here posted an ad for 1200 board feet of soft maple in thicknesses up to 6 inches. The ad said if someone bought it all, the could have it for $.75 a foot. I have been wanting to build a proper workbench for a while now, but I can’t afford the lumber at retail prices.

I ended up getting about 250 board feet of 8/4 12/4 and 16/4. He was only going to charge me .75 a foot, but I bumped it up because he was cutting me such a good deal. I ended up paying $200 for the load.

The boards are pretty straight, and should make a great bench. Widths up to 20”.

It was a farm tree his dad gott milled up years ago. It had been air drying in a barn for the last 10 plus years.

Wow, that’s a great way to get a slab for a bench. The 16/4 might be close to all the way dry inside after ten years. That’s a heck of a head start. What a score.

Thanks guys!

I called my local hardwood retailer to see what this would have cost me there. They don’t even carry 16/4 soft maple, and the 12/4’ which was local and air dried just like mine was 10 a foot. I got over $2400 of lumber for $200!

It’s nice stuff, too. Mostly clear and good color. I got a 20” wide 8/4 slab that’s 10 feet long and totally clear. Beautiful.

Have your say...
