(I did do a quick search and did not find recent activity on this topic; perhaps I missed it.)

Is there a feature or a workaround for finding fellow LJ’s who are located in a specific area?

I’d like to be able to ask certain questions that are location based like finding wood suppliers, shows, events, and possibly getting together for how-to’s and such.
Make sense?

Thank you,
Delain

Not that I’m aware of, but it would be nice. A lot of folks don’t even complete their profile.

I agree. I’ve found a few on chance that are near me, and one I met up with. Maybe there should be a sort of “push pin map” feature where folks can put a little pin on their general area, then could connect or ask questions of those who are nearby. Any admins know if this is possible? I’d also like to be able to get localized ideas from those who live near me.

I agree that this would be cool/helpful.

I think its been brought up before. People get a little reluctant to be specific where they are for a variety of reasons (theft being a big one).

http://lumberjocks.com/topics/2439 is one such discussion, albeit an old one. I wasn’t around this site at the time, but is sounds as if something pretty bad happened to a member’s wife.

Yikes! That’s kinda scary.

I think a push pin map would be pretty neat. you don’t have to post your address. If people want to meet up, they can do it at a lock watering hole until they know and trust each other.

I understand the nervousness. Even when I get rid of something of Craigslist, I will usually have them meet me away from the house. Just safer that way.

If the map was a circle of 10 sq miles you could drag and drop, that would solve the issue, and protect one’s address. Lots of plug ins for this stuff.

Why not just post a message indicating the general area where you live and ask anyone that lives nearby to PM you? For example, “I live in the Albuquerque, NM area and would like to hear from others that are within reasonable driving distance/time?” However, I am moving to NoVa at the end of the week.

I appreciate the responses on this so far and apologies for being slow to get back to this. I have a limited amount of time, in general, available for web surfing and anything else, so use as much as I can in the shop.

Well, I suppose this is pretty much a dead end topic, so I’ll step away for now and just hope for response from local contacts when I post a specific question on the other forum topics.

Thank you,
Delain

This thread could do a good job of that actually. I’m in upstate NY. If there are any LJs in my neck of the woods, reply on this thread.

I think the “safest” way would be to throw out a forum post about it if you want, kind of like what Art mentions.

Something like “Hey, LJ’s in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, want to meet up somewhere and hang out?”

We’ve had similar things before with my other hobby (computer modding), and have had some fun meeting people. We used to have monthly meet ups, we’d go to a Pizza place, a bar and grill, or somewhere with a party room if we could. Something to consider.

I certainly wouldn’t put my address in, whether or not it’s shown on the site specifically or not.

On one of the motorcycle forums I’m on, they have a “regional” forum, and when you go in there, there are subforums for individual regions (like “Northeast, or “NY/PA”, etc). Guys hang out in there to talk about group rides, garage days, etc. That would be kind of cool to have on here.

That’s the best way to set up a forum, it’s easier to find people in your area with people who want to connect with others locally. It could easily be separated into about 7 sub-forums.
