Hi All, I am in the process of building a baby cradle for my nephew’s new baby. I am building it out of tiger maple and was going to use either tung oil, which I used before, or danish oil. Does anyone have any suggestions. I was also thinking about putting a wipe-on poly on for the final top coat.
I have never used danish oil before and was not sure about it. I am not going to put any color on it, just natural.
Thanks in advance for the help.

There are several different finishes that are safe for your application, but for myself I always use shellac for any furniture, toys, etc. that a child comes in contact with.

I second shellac. If you are going for a natural look the shellac will bring out the highlights of the wood and is completely non-toxic and baby safe. Thin it down with denatured alcohol and rub it on the way you would with the oil. Several coats and it will look beautiful and you will have the piece of mind knowing if your nephew chews on it, he will be just fine! Most finishes, including poly, are safe when cured, but none are as safe as shellac – plus it is easily repairable.

I agree with whats been said. I dont think Shellac cures as hard as some other finishes, but it certainly is a lot safer. Shellac is actually used for a food coating in some cases, so you should be fine using it.
