I bought some domestic hardwood scraps from rockler and when I got them home, I realized that the walnut was the only one I could identify.
I am very new to woodworking.

Anybody got a recommendation on hardwood samples kit?
The basic requirements are: domestic hardwood & labeled with species.

Looking up online is useless because monitors just can’t properly portray colors (smells or textures either)

Hi Josh—
I don’t know if it was our regular 20 lb. domestic hardwood assortment, or if it was something the store made up for you. If it was the regular assortment, I can tell you it contains at least 4 of the following species: Oak, Maple, Birch, Cherry, Walnut and Mahogany.

Can you upload a few photos of the pieces you can’t identify? Someone here should be able to ID them.

I like the kit that woodcraft has to offer – thanks Kent.
The hobbithouse link is amazing for the info provided – thanks
I have no doubt that it I uploaded the pics someone could ID them but that would be several pics, and I am looking for a more permanent solution as a reference. Eventually I will be proficient at it myself.

Rockler – it is a very nice assortment of smaller blocks (i like them so much I ordered 2×20lb boxes from you) I just need to be more knowledgeable about them in order to use them more effectively. I am specifically looking to use it for a cutting board and a jewelry box or two.
