With my shop being so small I had very little room thus I had to hang my shop vac outside under a lean-to, it’s one of those big blue 4.5 gal that Lowes sold and since I have a DC in my shop I never had a need for it, so I just let it hang out there it had been out there for a good couple years or so as I hadn’t needed it until just over a week ago, since I’ve started the addition on to my shop little did I know what the little *&%^#$s were doing to it and that’s when it came to slap me in the face with the stench from the rodent feces and urine after turning it on, and also seeing it on top of the vac as well, I cleaned it off on the outside as best I could, spent a good 45 mins cleaning it then, used it to suck rain water out of some electrical conduit, that was a couple weeks ago and so today, I needed it inside of the shop and couldn’t use it the way it was and so I spent another hour and a half tearing it apart clear down to the motor and discovered the darn mice were living inside of it, what a mess, I managed to get it all cleaned using general purpose cleaner along with a bottle of water and bleach with tons of rags, all of the plastic parts I took the water hose to them, once the shop is complete, I’m going to turn my focus on the outside area getting it all cleaned up to git rid of the hiding areas. Now since I have a bigger shop the Vac will find it’s new home in the shop.

And you want us to help?????
Ammonia, bleach (not with the ammonia), explosives, sunshine, etc….....
I had the same issue with a vac. Wash, wash, rewash.
Do I need to be more detailed?
OK! Wash, wash, wash,..........................

I started using moth balls old style ones in my garage, as they were destroying my car.
It worked for the most part. On one occassion I saw a mouse, but not like before.

They can be nasty little mothers.
sprinkle some moth balls around the entrance, in corners. Not too much, you’ll regret it if you use too much.

Thanks Jeff, yeah I was just online looking at my options on getting rid of them and mothballs being one of the methods did pop up, I also saw a 5 gallon bucket used by making a ladder for the mouse to the top edge and spreading peanut butter on the inside top edge and allowing them to fall in.

Randy,

A farm breed shop cat. But then no birds, squirrels etc. Oh yeah even big rabbits. My outside cats love to hunt.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to upgrade to something more substantial to me!

Turn 2 cork-shaped pieces, and stick one in the hose or intake, and the other in the exhaust, like corks.
+1 the cat. Meow meow. Beatses the meeces to pieces.

“Have-A-heart” traps work well, just have to check them every day.

I considered a cat but have ruled that out, reason is I’d have to get a kitten to start off with in order to allow Shady my dog to adapt to it and with that being the case, I’d be at least a year before the cat would become a hunter plus I love feeding my wild birds, I know that bird feed attracts mice and rats but I keep the bird feed and the birds far away from my shop and also the back yard it’s all kept up front and my neighbors have cats that take care of the front for me, Older cats I’ve heard no longer hunt as much as the younger cats do but I’m going to instead try the 5 gal bucket and peanut butter trap method only without the water and just take them off to the woods.
