Hi Everyone,

I have a buddy who has asked me to put a back on this desk his dad built a long time ago. I bought a sheet of 1/4” oak plywood to use, but I don’t know where to begin on matching the color. He doesn’t want the rest of it refinished or touched, just the new back panel to match. This is my first time trying to match colors like this so I’m clueless and if you can save me some $$$ from simple trial and error with different stains that would be awesome.

If the desk is not 4×8 cut the ply to fit. Use the off cut to experiment. It looks like a golden oak.stain, but you may want to try just some Watco. Section off the off cut with pencil lines and try one coat of stain, two coats.of stain, three, experiment! Just get as many examples as you can Keep a.log of your attempts on the off cut. Choose the closest.
