I wanted to share a rather momentous experience I just had. Any time I find myself at any of the big box stores, I head straight for the clearance section. Generally, it’s filled with discontinued door knobs, flashlights, and all sorts of hard hats for various NFL teams. But occasionally, there’s a real gem. I picked up a Porter Cable Random Orbit sander from this section for $35. Several weeks later, I found a pile of four packs of Irwin Handy Clamps for $4 a pack. After these two finds, my trusted and seemingly hidden Clearance section seemed to dry up. Month after month passed, and still no good deals. Today, however, it proved it wasn’t finished bearing its sweet discounted fruit. There, sitting on the floor, was a DeWalt 13” portable planer. I couldn’t believe my eyes. This was the exact same planer that received top honors in this year’s tool round up by Fine Woodworking. I remembered it was also one of the most expensive ones, at about $570. Yet here it was, on clearance, for $270 dollars. I was floored. Well, I loaded it onto the nearest flat bed, and headed on my merry way. Right as I was about to check out, a DeWalt rep stopped me, and said “Hey, this is for you for buying DeWalt.” He then handed me a pilot point bit set. Yes, today was a very, very good day. I encourage you to scour your nearest big box store’s clearance sections, because believe me, there’s real treasure to be had.
