Sorry, could not find a catagory that fit this properly so admins move as you see fit.

Question for you guys/gals that have built your shops. I’ve acquired my retirement land about 5 acres at lovely Smith Mountain Lake VA. While I’m not going to retire for another 2 years, I’m planning now. The shop will be done first and a 2nd floor for livings space while the primary residence is completed. After vacating the shop, for the final home, it will be come a full time shop for me to work and sell my pieces out of. The 2nd floor will be converted into a glass work area for the wife as she does stained glass and kiln work.

For me, first floor will be work area show area, and a finishing area and material storage areas.

I’m trying to find some resemblance of shop plans with no luck. I’ve looked at 3 & 4 detached garages etc, but nothing exactly fits.

Have any of you done anything similar, and how did you get around it. I hate the thought of an architect for a shop :)

Have you tried drawing what you would like in a footprint? That might give you some direction, instead of looking for a needle in a haystack.

Someone that knows what they are doing needs to draw the construction plans, especially for a two story building. Just sayin’.

Good luck.

Should have been a bit clearer. I’ve set up 4 shops so I know what I want where. I’m looking for building plans I could just add in my shop too. Looks like I’m going to have to bite the bullet and just pay the architect to plan the shop/living space along with the house.

Have you looked at building plans software? There are a number available via a Google search. Code in your location may or may not require an architect or draftsman sign off. FWIW
