Stopped by a local antique mall today and found a wooden molding plane. I don’t know much about them but this one seemed to be in really goood shape and wasn’t too pricey. Got this one for 20.00. Most of the ones that I see at the markets are usually cracked, worn or have nails in them.
Anyone know much about the maker and how does this one look to you?

Troy,

That’s what is known as a hollow. Looks to be somewhere around a #10 in size. Google “hollows and rounds” for far more information that you likely want to know.

That one looks to be in decent shape. Could use a cleaning and sharpening, but would quite useable.

Some info on the interwebz about the Chapin-Stephens Co., too.

It’s a #14 and these don’t seem to be as popular as the profiled planes but might come into use on a cove I guess. I figures for 20 bucks it wouldn’t hurt to snag it up.

It cleaned up good, got blade honed and gave it a test run. I think I’ll be able to find uses for this.

That looks pretty good Troy. $20 for a good usable wood moulding plane? That’s a great price.

Im up to 35 or so wood planes myself, with more on the way.. I showed them all in a blog a while if here if you want to see.

Have your say...
