I use a 5 tpi rip handsaw and it cuts 1/4” to 3/8” per stroke, but in some places along the cut it goes 3 or 4 inches. Those places are so soft I can dent the wood light finger pressure. It is #2 common.

Sounds like it might be punky. Do you know what species it is?

Given the quality required of the wood to be sold at any retail giant, especially the orange one in my area, this surprises me none. I would take it back if I were you, it’s junk.

This was from the blue one. We had two family owned hardware stores in our small town, but this one moved in and the good ones went out of business within a year.

That is depressing, BUT …

in your part of the world, you’ve got to be near a sawmill or three. Have you looked around?

Is that the crap that’s Lowe’s sells called Whitewood? I think it comes from South America and is one step above Styrofoam board. I gotten some pieces of the Whitewood that had no density to it.

Plywood with rot is another sight at the Big Orange Retail Giant, so no surprise.
Are you sure that so-called Whitewood is not Balsa?

Big box stores sell that wood because a 2’ long piece of that will soak up a whole quart of stain just beautifully.

Yikes. Dump the wood for scraps.
