I’ll say up front, I’ve got quite a bit of LN. I just recently added a whole set of their chisels.
Well I had been wanting to add a smoother to the stable of planes, and must say after watching Rob Cosmon’s video and the new revised Wood River 4.5 plane he helped change for Wood craft I thought hard about giving it a try.
I wanted to get a router plane anyway so I called LN and while speaking with them and ordering the router plane with depth stop decided, I’m going to stay with LN for the 4 1/2 smoother for several reasons. First They are made in America. (no offense to other nationalities). Second, I know they are expensive, but they are just Great tools that I enjoy to use. I can’t help but not Grin from ear to ear when using them. Also they are pretty ready out of the box to use.
So I ordered the 4 1/2 and I’m looking forward to getting it and using it. Now the cool part.
Years ago I had just purchased my LN low angle jack plane. It was my first one. I had it on my bench doing some work and banking on some wood and the plane was on it’s side. I did not notice that it was vibrating to the side of the bench and off it went to the floor. I gasped, like a child had fallen. Luckily as I watched it fall it rotated to the handle side down and that’s what hit. Luckily no damage at all to the plane and I’ve used it for years. However it cracked the handle. I super glued it back together and it’s been functional ever since, but I love my tools and it hurt to see that cracked handle.
So while ordering my plane, I decided to order a replacement handle and knob (so the patina will match). The guy on the phone says he was going to put a set in no charge. I made it clear it was my fault not a defective part. I was prepared to pay for the replacement part.
I did not refuse the freebe for sure. Just a class act.
So LN I tip my virtual hat to you!!
