New guy to the forums here – I’m about to buy a 13” drum sander from General International and was hoping to hear if anyone has any experience with this machine, model number 15-155. I found it for $1199 plus free shipping online.

I need the 110V service because I can’t get 220V in my shop right now, I also need the 3.75 inch max thickness. None of the Performax 10-20, 16-32, or 22-44 are options for me for various reasons. The Grizzly and Shop Fox baby drum sanders are not options because I’ve read that they have plastic gears which are a nightmare and I want nothing to do that.

I can’t find reviews ANYWHERE on the General International 13” drum sander, although there’s tons of good ones on the bigger models. If you have one in the Chicago area (or even NW Indiana or Mid-Michigan) I would love to come look at it, or at least please help with any information about it that I may have overlooked.

Update: No one replied to this request for reviews, and given my previous difficulty finding reviews I honestly wonder if anyone has ever even bought this unit. I ended up ordering the 15-155M1 through Acme Tools and on the first conversation I was told it was in stock in Tennessee and it would be one week before it gets to the distributor, and another week to get to me. Second phone call one week later – I’m told that it has not even shipped yet and that it could be about 5 more weeks. I didn’t know what to do, so I thought about it and called again the next day to cancel and then I was finally told the truth – its on back order and General International is having “labor issues” that have totally halted all shipments from Taiwan. So I ended up wasting a whole week that I desperately needed a drum sander to help with huge order volumes for my small shop. I don’t know if Acme lied to me about it being in stock, or if General International lied to them and then that bad info was just passed along.

End result – I ended up going to my local Rockler store where I was able to test the Jet 16-32 and that thing honestly had WAY more power than I expected. From what I had read online drum sanders were low on power, but this thing took a rough piece of pine and took the twist out and made it perfectly smooth in three passes. I ended up dropping $1596 out the door on the Jet 22-44 drum sander (Beaver Industrial Supply) and its supposed to arrive tomorrow morning!

Have your say...
