Topic tags/keywords: question adze bowl So I am considering getting a set of these adzes: https://www.etsy.com/listing/180276763/set-of-3-wood-carving-woodworking-bowl They come in two different types of steel, AISI-4150 or ????-50X HRC~ 50-55 and I don’t know jack about which one to get. I want a solid sharp tool and maintain things well so I don’t need stainless. If anyone has a suggestion on a different budget bowl adze I am all ears. Thanks! |

This looks like the same maker that someone asked about previously but they linked to ebay that time, wouldn’t be surprised if they sold on both. Here’s the review: http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/3729 Also I’m not sure that’s two different kinds of steel. Those are Cyrillic characters in the second part. Why not try asking the seller about the steel? I see in one of the listings for the separate adze it just says “AISI-4150 HRC 50-55” for the steel. I’m guessing what you saw is just a language barrier. I’m thinking unless you find a deal on a vintage adze, that might be your best bet for a budget adze. Let us know how you like it if you get one. |

Definitely check him out on ebay – his price seems a bit lower there. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SET-OF-THREE-WOOD-CARVING-BOWL-ADZE-TOOLS-STRAIGHT-BIG-SMALL-CURVED-ADZE-/141612192921 Sorry I can’t help you with the steel question. It does kind of seem like there is only one kind of steel – on the Ebay page it says Excellent steel – AISI-4150 or ГОСТ-50X HRC~ 50-55 Since I wrote that review I’ve used it quite a bit more and am still very happy (recently bought another one with less curve to the blade). -- Jeremy, in the Acadian forests |
