Topic tags/keywords: rocking chair chair

I am looking at designing and building a padded rocking chair like the one pictured below. The problem that I have is that I don’t know how to do the padded seat and back. I have built rocking and dining room chairs with curved backs and padded seats but the backs are not as comfortable as I would like and the seats get hard after awhile. I made the seats with about 2” thick foam and then 3/4” plywood which does not give. The rocking chair below is very comfortable and feels like the base has springs or something and I’m not sure about the back. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to design and build the seat cushion and padded back?

Here's a great thread where the guy documents the build of an upholstered chair in great detail.

It’s not exactly what you’re going for but might give you some ideas…

Also, look for books on upholstery…

Thanks Herb, after I posted this I searched on Google for seat springs and finally found some information. I am going to look at upholstery books also, thanks for the suggestion.
