I wasn’t sure if this was the correct forum, but here it goes.

I’ve got a bar style pool table without the coin mechanism. I’ve removed the old laminate and am planning on putting real veneer on it. When removing the old laminate, a good bit of the plywood came up with it.

I bought some Bondo from my local auto parts store and proceeded to give it a skim coat to even out the surface. The problem is, the Bondo isn’t getting hard enough to sand. It starts to wad up and gums the sandpaper. I’ve got my Bosch sander on low speed so that it doesn’t heat it up, but it makes no difference. Even when hand sanding, the same thing happens.

I’ve used Bondo plenty of times before and never had this problem. I’m using plenty of hardener and it’s 68 degrees in my basement.

Bad batch? I suppose it’s possible.

Does anyone know of a product that would better suit my intentions?

Either you didn’t use enough hardener, didn’t mix it enough, or the hardener is bad (it does have a rather short shelf life compared to the polyester resin which bondo basically is). Another alternative would be to use epoxy.

PS: If you have done any fiberglass work, the polyester resin can also be used instead of bondo.

My first choice would have been the Bondo, but there is a product called Durhams Rock Hard water putty that also works very well. I suspect that any of the wood putties might also do well.
