I received an old gouge today which is actually in decent, albeit rusty shape. It has a nice solid wooden handle with a brass ferrule, and is a tang-style with an octagonal base to the tang. It appears to have been a pretty decent gouge when it was made. Stamped in the handle is G MAUS & CO (with a horizontal line under the ‘O’). My phone battery is dead, so no pics at the moment.

I googled it, and the only other things I can find by the maker is a router plane blade and some sort of chisel-type thing in a Norwegian museum. That makes sense, because the gouge comes to me from my stepfather, who got it from his father (born early 1900s) who probably got it from a Norwegian immigrant woodworker (who was in his 80s in ca. 1925). Here is a photo of the logo from the ebay router iron. It’s the same as the one on my gouge.

Can anyone tell me anything about the gouge? Is it collectable or valuable, or just obscure? I’d like to clean it up and make it a user, but if it’s super rare, I may pass it to a collector or return it to the original owner.
