Well, such as, uh everywhere and over here, and places like that, as well as over here, uh, we should really feel, that is if we could, well, uh be here and not there, we can feel bad for the people that don’t live here, even though there is okay, it’s not uhhh, here and then we could have a better, ummm, way. That’s how I, umm, feel. -- You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. (Plato) |

If this is true, and I have no reason to know if it is or not, she clearly had trouble answering this question. Whatever the reason for her inarticulate answer pointing out her deficiency and calling everyone’s attention to it is really no better than a child on a playground pointing at someone and laughing. If it is a parody of the typical blond stereotype it’s not particularly humorous, if it is real then it is not clear how we benefit or are better people by forwarding it around the internet and laughing at her. By laughing at her do you somehow feel driven to be a better person? Somehow upgrade your skills in geography or public speaking….? Yeah, I didn’t think so. And don’t tell me you all were just so shocked and amazed you just had to ask the world if it were true. So what if it is, so what if it isn’t. It’s not funny and it’s not beneficial, why invest your energy in it. |

It is ealy in the day and I am going to ramble a bit <laugh>, this is just one opinion, I have many oposing ones.. I even argue with my self sometimes <grin>. Coloradoclimber, why is it wrong to talk about it or for that matter even laugh at it? It was funny , sad, embarrassing and more. I have been up in front of 100s of people doing presentations and have luckily never had a moment that bad but the fear was always there :) I have had moments that were bad and I laughed at them and don’t mind others have a good giggle at my expense. When people puts themselves up in front of the world to be judged they should expect the world to see and talk about it. It is only right that we get to see the best and also the worst and then get to joke, laugh and maybe try to learn. In this case maybe learning that we all make mistakes could be something that we take a way from this. Maybe holding a Miss teen USA contest is almost as dumb as her answer but what ever you take a way form this (her answers lame as they were) it is it there for all to see and talk about. -- "so much to learn and so little time".. |

Bob, I made the same un-flattering corollary with our Chief Executive. Like the other Bob, you too don’t seem to shy away from controversy. Tapadh leat. When I first saw this post and followed the link in one of my nighttime rambles, I decided to just close the door and keeping walking and muttering down the cyber-hallway, rather than sticking my head in and giving comment. But now I can’t resist. Beauty queens (and politicians) are a rarefied breed apart from the normal humans. These are the people who came up with butt adhesive to more firmly bond long dresses to their admirable backsides, so you know it’s another world than the one we occupy. Now I’ll keep ambling and muttering down the cyber-hallway. -- "Bordnerizing" perfectly good lumber for over a decade. |

Many things could be said and are being said in regard to this girl’s response to the question posed to her. I actually saw this a couple of days ago on YouTube and commented on it there. I guess I was surprised at how unmerciful most people are in general. I read remarks that were obsene and scurrilous to say the least. Even the remarks which I posted were attacked by a number of those on the site. Although it’s good to have a sense of humor and get a laugh and even laugh at ourselves, it is never appropriate to laugh at someone else. The fact is, it is was BEAUTY contest. The girl was there because of her beauty. And, from my perspective, she is BEAUTIFUL. I don’t think anybody will argue that she isn’t beautiful (unless they’re just jealous). Secondly, it’s a rare individual that possesses both beauty AND intellect in equal proportions. This girl HAS beauty, but maybe not as much intellect. I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt though, and suppose that maybe while she was being televised in front of thousands of people in the audience, that maybe she had a “memory lapse.” I have spoken in front of groups of people too, and know that it can happen to the best of us. My son is a very gifted piano performer. For all of his really important performances, he has to memorize huge amounts of complex music, and then perform it from memory. That in itself is a monumental achievement! Performers have to do this in front of large audiences. There is something that can happen to performers when they do this called a “memory lapse.” When this occurs, they have to kind of “wander / improvise” until their brain can get back in sync, and they can remember their place in their music. I have been in the audience when this has happened to my son, and could tell that he was having one of these “lapses.” It is a very scarry and embarrassing moment for the performer. As a parent in the audience, the only thing I could do was to pray that my son would get back on track. If this girl was my daughter (and by the way, I live in South Carolina and have a daughter), I would hope and pray that people would be merciful and gracious to her. We all like to think that we are “smarter than the average bear,” but we are what we are by God’s grace. If we have intellect, it’s because God gave it to us. If we have beauty, it’s because God gave it to us. Realizing that fact will give each of us a sense of humility and perspective on things like this poor young girl, who had a bad moment in front of millions of people. When it’s all said and done, she’ll be more famous for her gaff, than she would have become if she articulated an amazingly perfect answer to the question that was posed to her. -- Tom, Surfside Beach, SC - Romans 8:28 |

I agree with TomFran (who doesn’t spell his name backwards) that seldom are people blessed with beauty AND intellect (except in my case). So since I have beauty AND intellect that must explain why most politicians have neither. And I’m not sure if most people are aware that it is NOT the President of the United States that makes the decisions that he is alledgedly making but a staff of Generals and Staff and Cabinet Members (NOT cabinet makers) who make these decisions and make the President stand in front of millions of my fellow Americans and verbalize. George W. Bush is a fine man and shouldn’t be judged by what these decision makers make him quote. He didn’t declare war on his own accord, but at the insistance of the American people and the group of advisors. Therefore he shouldn’t get the credit for these decisions nor should he get the blame. When terrorists demolished the World Trade Center, killing thousands of people, the American people demanded retalliation. Then when we retalliated the sissies of the world cried about how we went about it. THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA… STILL THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON THE PLANET !!! (This should really throw gas on the fire) HAHAHAHAHA !!!!! |

Coloradoclimber, I understand your comments and can only add, if she indeed had a mental handicap, physical impairment, or attribute that left her open for the ridicule and condescension of others, then I would feel shame in mocking her. ...However, as she is participating in a beauty contest, demonstrating she has none of those aforementioned conditions, I have to agree with, Don…lighten up. Now can I get you a coffee? I’m headed down to the shop! Everyone, Now, I believe that anyone can be poked fun at. Provided it’s done in a fashion that has them going along for the ride and realizing the intent is only to laugh, not to hurt. When I see someone public speaking, at weddings, in church, or wherever, I pray for them. I understand I could be the one that suddenly forgets my name. When watching that video, I couldn’t get all the way through it. It was painful. Watching the total collapse in any forum is not a spectacle for joy. I can’t type fast enough to express the thoughts going through my head, hoping that all involved in this realize the motivation for Don’s post. Hoping they realize the motivation for Bob (who spells his name backwards) reply. This is not an attack on this poor girl. It is the presentation of a total collapse allowing people to view it and feel how they want to feel. Don didn’t say, “Look at this dummy!” I know Bob a little. In poking fun at Bush Jr., he is not starting a movement, nor burning the flag. He is not invading your sovereign waters or airspace. He is not threatening the republic or anything she represents. He is not subverting the office of the President nor the function of your congress or senate. He is simply comparing a young gal with limited public speaking experience and a level of anxiety commesurate with her situation, to a man that continues to demonstrate difficulty in getting his point across. As Canadians, our major exposure to Mr. Bush is not by sitting in the oval office and talking with him, it’s through YOUR left wing news media that lambastes this man every other day. The sound bites we see are of a rambling idiot. I’m quite certain that one cannot rise to the office of President of the United States of America, by being the sort of stumbling idiot that your news media portrays. However, that is our exposure to him. TomFran, when your son had a lapse, it did not bring joy to anyone in the audience and it would not be a source of ridicule by anyone I’ve met in this forum. I understand and appreciate your position of comparing the young beauty contestant to your son. However, it is a comparison of apples to elephants. You know why and I won’t attempt to clarify that point because I feel it would only condescend. If you have video of your sons performance, I would love to see it. I’m sure if we were all sitting around the campfire, this discussion would have gotten the 30 seconds it deserved. LOL! Just for fun Obi, I wanted to let you know that, even though our forces and resources are limited, Canadians are still dying in Afghanistan in full support of the war against terror. However, as that comment would have been seen as inflammatory in response to your “sissies of the world,” comment, I decided to make a peanut butter sandwich and to not make my reply that might have been misconstrued as me taking your reply as a personal attack. Mmmmmm, peanut butter. -- You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. (Plato) |

If we were all sitting around a campfire, and heard this on the radio (where my wife and I first did) we’d either lament the downfall of our education system, or comment on how hard it is to speak in public, especially on your toes, and especially as a teenager. Or you could just shake your head in disbelief as we both did (not being geographically challenged) and lets not think about the younger generations taking care of us when we’re older. Maybe if the politicians would think of that, they’d stop cutting the schools budgets! -- I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso -- http://snbcreative.wordpress.com/ |

It’s all kinds, Russel. I think as far as this whole thing is concerned, if you don’t laugh you’ll have to cry. Our children are NOT being educated by a group of uneducated college graduates. Here, where we live, we have tiny classes. Our granddaughters go to a school with a total of about 18 students. One of the area grade schools has 2 students. Our graduating classes have 12-15. The percentage of seniors going on to college is around 95%. Amazingly we have very good teachers. We also have involved parents. Our school district is about 40×40 miles. Once you get out of our district to the west, the kids stay at the state boarding school at Crane, Oregon. It’s just to far to drive. I didn’t see this on tv or would probably have been shocked. I have to agree, the video was a laugh to avoid crying situation. It is sad that too many kids come out of school so ill-prepared. I am saddened that this young lady has presented herself as an example to other young people; that’s what winning these contests is supposed to be. It is unfortunate that she thinks herself qualified. Which nicely ties into Steven’s blog where he talks about learning to appreciate quality over quantity. That level of understanding is lost on too many these days. -- When you give someone a chance it may well be their last. |
