Hello all,

I’ve been working on a dresser and chest of drawers for my daughters room. I’m approaching the time to start building the drawer boxes and I’m deciding on what material to use. I was at my local BORG and noticed they have various lengths of 1x cedar for sale in the wood isle next to the oak and poplar. It has kind of a shaggy appearance to it so I’m not sure if it’s just unfinished or it’s just some certain type of cedar. I’ve seen cedar used in drawer construction and of course cedar chests before and was wondering if the BORG cedar will work or are there different types of cedar? I do have a jointer and planer so I’d be able to surface it if in fact it will work. So, will it work?
Thanks!

More than likely not what you want, I’m guessing you are talking about wanting the Red aromatic cedar. If you find some at the borg store, it’ll be in pkgs of thinner planks and pretty pricey, the times I’ve seen them there.

If you’re not looking to build a “cedar chest”, with natural aromatic moth repellent, that cedar might work just fine. It should be kiln dried and clear, not wet deck lumber. Look for the boards with diagonal to close to vertical grain, as you look at the end of the board (quarter and rift sawn). Avoid any board that has the center, or pith, of the tree visible in the end of the board.

I really like cedar and pine for drawer sides. It makes for a clean, light drawer, and is nice to dovetail. The stuff you’re looking at probably needs to be surfaced, as in jointed and planed, before being used in furniture. Since most drawer sides are thinner than 3/4”, closer to 1/2”, you’ll have plenty of wood to remove to create a nice surface.

When I use cedar or pine for drawer sides, I don’t use any finish at all on the sides, back or bottom of the drawer. The bottom should be lined with shelf paper before use.

Thanks for the replys. I think I’ll grab a few small lengths to surface and see how they turn out..

Barry, do you mostly fly cessna’s? I fly a noisier model…

“Barry, do you mostly fly cessna’s? I fly a noisier model…’

Yup! I bought a very nicely equipped and maintained C182 off the Pennsylvania State Police in December and sold my Beech Sundowner in February.

Do you fly a noisier Cessna, as in a Citation, or a different brand?

The noisiest thing I’ve “flown” was a 190,000 watt sound system. <g>

Actually, I drive a DC9 for Northwest..err Delta…err NorthDelta…or whatever we are now. I’ve got plenty of Cessna time, however, as I’ve been a civilian pilot my whole life. That 182 is a nice ride, I’m jealous. A buddy of mine recently bought a 185 so I still get to do some real flying.

But this being lumberjocks and all, have you ever thought of building an airplane?? I’ve got a bunch of hours in a Stearman and I’ve seen a set of wings being built…very cool, no dresser drawers, but cool…

Oh yeah, 190,000 watts!?@$# I can only imagine…

The borg cedar around where I live is usually western cedar and to me is a little soft to use for drawers. I’d use poplar, maple or white oak for durability, but that’s just me. Good luck!

Carl, I have 100+ year old antiques, including the 1905 piece I keep my clothes in, with “soft” pine drawers.

Smash, a buddy of mine captains CRJ’s out of Detroit for Pinnacle, painted like your airline! I have thought of building a plane, as I cut my woodworking teeth building 1/4 and 1/3 scale aircraft on a contract basis. In the sound world, we describe a system hanging from the rigging as “flown”... <g> Do you get to Bradley much?
