My hard drive crashed and I lost a lot of project photos. Is there any way to recover the photos from my projects posted here on LJ? I tried to edit a posted project and was unsucessful in downloading pictures from the project. Any help would be aprreciated.

If the HDD is clicking, (stepper motors) or overheating, or doing just about anything but spinnining up, put it in the freezer for a few hours. When you take it out, hook it up to the new machine as an aux. drive.

From there tell Windows to look for .jpg, .png, etc. files on the aux hard drive.
Choose the ones that you need, off load them and you are free. Or you can send it to me, I have a machine my partner and I used in the computer shop to recover data for businesses.
I won't charge anything as I don't do a lot of computer work anymore, except for the park and for myself and the company that owns our park. It might take a week or two, I have to dig the hardware out of the storage shed.

Hi Vincent-
I saw your post and wanted to share that Secure Data Recovery will likely be able to retrieve your data. That's a huge loss as I'm sure you'd want to keep a record of your projects. Secure Data can give you a quote for free. Let them know Kara sent you in the Notes and they may be able to offer a discount. Here's the link to request help:

Good luck!

If you haven't given up on recovering data from the drive itself…

1) Do not do anything with it. Turn off the computer and don't run it.
2) Get a disk image using GNU ddrescue
3) Use photorec to get your images back

Most people would have a step 2.5) Find someone else to do the following. Someone else may be a company such as Kara recommended, though when I have looked in the past they run in the $500-$2500 range perhaps. Also, there are tools other than ddrescue and photorec, but the first step is getting as much of the raw bits off the drive as possible and for software-only solutions, ddrescue is pretty good at that.

Try right clicking on the photo in the thread and choosing "save picture as"

Okay. So I tried what christeF recommended. No problem at all to do it that way. (Pic Below)

Except you have 60 Projects with about 5 pictures in each. that's Approx.. 300 Pictures to go after.

That's a lot of pictures to download. Unless you want to pick and choose which ones you want.

I used a program a long time ago to recover what I could of everything when my Computer went BANG! The program was "Recuva". It was not easy to use and what came back was not in any particular order.

Perhaps someone will come up with a better way.

One thing I did learn from my experience was to use a separate tape to Back Up Everything on my Computer about once a month. It's made by Toshiba, around $29.00 at Staples. It plugs into any free USB Port and has a capacity of 1.0 Terabyte, that's One Trillion Bytes.

Good Luck: Rick
