It would be easier to keep up with conversations if when I did something like ”@FellowLumberJock” in the body of text it would highlight that and they would know something said may need a reply.

I know this may be cost prohibitive. Just wondering.

thanks,
SI

Sorry to disagree but this is not facebook, Just having a “like” button will elimanate the need to have comments.
If you want to keep up with fellow lumberjocks just go to any members home page and make them your buddy.

No sir. I didnt mean “Like” button. I got off the FB grid a few years ago and i hate the “like” button. This was referring to me typing here “And as @a1Jim said about router tables….” The @a1Jim would 1. be hyper linked to you and 2. it would alert you that you were being talked about so you could say “No @SirIrb, that was not a T-slot I used there….”

To me #2 would be the more important.

I agree with the basic sentiment: If I wanted FB I would be on FB. I dont and am not.

I can understand what you are asking for. Sometimes I will comment and ask a question in a reply. It would be nice to be able to know when someone elaborated on my reply.

Currently, you can go to your “My LumberJocks” → “My Home” page and see what you have commented on. But it is up to you to remember which comments included questions that you need to check back up on.

I would like when you get the email about whatever comments or follow and you click the link it would take you to that comment instead of the beginning and you may have to scroll though alot of comments to figure out what was said before you get to ok this was my last comment so everything from here is new.I.e the link takes you to the last email post.

I’m a member on a college football forum and that feature is very helpful. You get an alert anytime someone quotes your post or enters your member name in the ”@” format.

As you are typing a reply and use the ”@” sign, it will list all matching members and begin narrowing down the list as you type more letters. Once you see member’s name, just highlight and hit enter or click with the mouse.

For what its worth, it also has a “Like” button and it doesn’t seem to curtail replies that have substantial content; just the short one or two word type comments.

That is not going to happen in the current coding format but maybe when the site gets upgraded.

Good Sir. I am lazy. It is easier to hit @—one key—than ”” two (Shift doesnt count…because it makes my argument to say that).

If this wasnt my thread and I hadn’t gotten an email that it had been commented on I wouldnt have known. But if you began this with @SirIrb and the system said to itself “Hummm, I think I ll pop a notice up in SirIrb’s ‘My LumberJocks’ so he knows someone is calling him out” then it would be easier.

@Cricket.
One can hope. Thank you.

I use a very easy process to do this if I understand you correctly. In the Upper Right Hand Corner of ALL Posts there is a Green Box with an Eyeball in it that says ”Watch” when it’s like that it means you are NOT watching that Posting. Click on it and it changes to Red and says ”Unwatch”. That means you ARE now watching that Post.

If someone else comments on that Post you should then receive an e-mail on your Personal Computer telling you that, and you can click on that notice and go right to that Post.

You can also go to the ”Pulse” page click on ”My Watchliist” and it will appear there also.

I just Posted on someone else’s Post and at the bottom of this page ”Pulse” is already telling me someone has commented after me. I can click on that and go directly there.

Hope this is of some use to you.

I should let this die because LJ code doesn’t allow for this.
But. I am not saying you missed the point. I am sure this works fine when you know where you may be mentioned or a topic is being talked about that you already know. But if you don’t even know it exists it doesn’t help you whereas @SirIrb goes straight to the system, hyperlinks the name to the profile and notifies that person “hey dummy, they talking smack about your table saw over on this thread” ok, it wouldn’t say that but you would see you have been called out. It is one good thing fb did. I actually hate fb but some of what they do is good conceptually.
Twitter too. #LoveMyWood

Forum software comes already structured by the designer or developers. To change the structure you have to know CSS to make changes or the developers have a plugin to make more addons such as what the OP would like to see on LJ.

If and when there’s an upgrade to LJ the Admin for LJ should maybe do a survey with us to see what we would like to add or take away from the forum, He, or she. could then use a plugin to make it happen for us or be able to make changes to the CSS.

Any of you that have a CMS such as Wordpress for your website or blog should know about plugins that make your site fit more in with what you want.

Forums such as LJ can be expense especially with the amount of visitors it gets and some forum software can be expensive to purchase or lease. I’m going to be building a blog for myself and will be using a free CMS called b2evolution or Joomla because of the plugins they have. I’m not a fan of Wordpress even though it’s the number one with 1000’s of free plugins and 1000’s of free awesome templates.

Daddy:

I just now received your Posting at my Home on My Computer. When I clicked on it, it took me directly to your Comments. I guess there other factors involved here, be it Our Computers or The Site.

However it appears that while my process as mentioned above works as I’ve stated, it’s not exactly what the OP is looking for …”I should let this die because LJ code doesn’t allow for this.
But. I am not saying you missed the point. I am sure this works fine when you know where you may be mentioned or a topic is being talked about that you already know.”

Thank you for your “Politeness” SirIrb. Much appreciated. I think I’ll “Politely” ...LOL… back out now as I’ve contributed about all I can .

Maybe I missed something with the politeness comment. I wasn’t trying to make any bad remark. The “lj code” I mentioned was programming code.

Missing the whole boat here seems to be the concept that, yes, you can make it so that when you want to be notified you can be. That’s cool. But I would like to see it to where when I am mentioned in a area of the forum or when I want to draw another jocks attention to a thread all I have to do is @jock.
