Advice on marble counter tops

Am putting in new kitchen cabinets and the wife wants granite counters. What are the advantages and disadvantages and what are my alternatives ie. corion and frormica? Ray

slab granite tops are great. They also retain value for a kitchen. There are alternatives to granite. There are some man made slabs that mimic stone. These are acyually harder and more resistant to staining. However, they do not look like granite. We put in granite tops quite a few years ago and they look brand new. We make sure they get thoroughly cleaned about every six months and a high quality sealant applied. Not much to it. Corian is nice but can get burn marks and some staining. Formica will take a beating but does chip and can get burn marks.
I would say that granite is one of the best for low maintenance.
In the end it really depends on the overall style one is trying to achieve.
