Happy and safe 4th to all my fellow lumberjocks! I will be celebrating with my family by doing our favorite summer activity. Fastpitch Softball!! I will be putting the final coat of finish on a small project and building flagstone steps outside my shop door. If all goes well, I will also plant a flagstone path around to the driveway from the steps. Then I plan on lying down and whining about my aching back. An Old Friend sent me this yesterday. Have a Great Fourth Everyone. THE 4TH OF JULY Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr.., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn’t. So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It’s not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free! It’s time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games -- Mike in Manchester, NH---Unpleasant tasks are simply worthy challenges to improve skills. |

I’m visiting my daughter and I’ll get to use the deck we built a couple of weeks ago. I smoked a turkey today so we’ll have meat to eat at the picnic, and dessert made with blueberries that we picked. Happy Independence Day all. -- What happens in the workshop stays in the workshop. I am working. Hopefully it will be a good day and no one will blow or cut off an appendage while I am on duty. Keep your fingers out of harms way and keep the alcohol to a minimum. Please dont drink and drive, wear a seatbelt. Its makes for a long bloody day for me when those rules arent followed. I was on vacation the past week catching up on various projects in the shop. Finished all of them and still had all my digits in tact. Decided to give the better half a hand in the kitchen today and managed to nearly lop off the end of my thumb cutting up pototoes for potato salad. Time to head back to the safety of my shop. I do miss the days of fireworks of the 4th and when they played the Star Spangled Banner how everyone stood and so many had tears in their eyes… Even with bad economys there was still a solidness in each person and… I hope those days come back. -- Never board, always knotty, lots of growth rings |

Took the family to the lake all day…rode around on the boat and ate like a pig….and just enjoyed having my son home from the military. He has been over seas for two years and is on leave for two weeks. BUT he will not be doing back over seas…his commanding officer nominated him for the military academy and he was accepted….so he reports there on the 14th. -- Don S.E. OK |

I’ve had the last 2 weeks off so I have to go back to work on the evening of the 4th (Bummer). We went to NM and sweltered in the 100+ heat. However, we got to explore Carlsbad Caverns! I highly recommend the trip to everyone but also recommend that you do it during the cooler months. -- Behind the Bark is a lot of Heartwood----Charles, Centennial, CO |

Littlecopes message about the signers of the Declaration of Independence was very sobering and pretty difficult to relate to in this day and age for those of us who have enjoyed results of the revolution without great sacrifice. Brave men and families who lost everything for the benefit of future generations. If that isn’t brotherly love, I don’t know what is. -- Mike, American in Norway |
