Topic tags/keywords: steel city bandsaw tablesaw

I recently purchased 3 Steel City machines from Wood Werks and I was having an issue with the fitment of blades of the 14” bandsaw, long story short a square nut that fits into the tensioning block wasn’t in its recess causing the tension not to be released. While I was trying to figure out the problem I phoned Steel City and the call was answered by an answering machine with a message stating that they are closed and ceasing operations on March 31 2015 and for any warranty needs to contact the distributor from with the purchase was made. With this information I called Wood Werks and spoke to Todd about my fitment issues and then about the message I had received from Steel City. Todd assured me this is yet another restructuring and that General International has bought out Steel City and is moving the headquarters to Canada. I asked about warranty in the future as was told General International plans to honor all warranties, only since it is a Canadian company there will be a duty charged at the border and shipping will be the responsibility of the owner. Just a little FYI for anyone thinking of purchasing Steel City machinery in the near future.

I have been very happy with my purchases so far, its been about a month. I plan on doing some reviews after I have put them through there paces. I wasn’t able to find much info about the latest models they came out with after the last restructuring in late 2014.

Last year I purchased a Steel City 14” Band Saw, putting it together was quit a task,
after I tuned it up at least it cut’s pretty good. Since it is a 2hp unit the motor is loud
and when I stop it, the motor rattles on for about for about 5 or so seconds before coming
to a full stop. I’m in the process of deciding to purchase a new saw, or just spend time
up grading this unit. I primarily use a band to saw my bird of prey patterns for further
carving, so I need my band saw for cutting around large of small sharp circles.

When I purchased this band saw, I knew very little about band saws other wish I would
have never purchased one from Steel City. So if those of you that know more about band
saws that would serve my purposes, i’m open to suggestions.
Oscar

You do realize that Steel City (or any saw manufacturer for that matter) doesn’t make the motor… right? If it bugs you that much, you can just replace the motor. Or is it some other issue causing the noise?

Cheers,
Brad

You SURE it’s the motor that rattles? Maybe it’s loose bolts on the belt guard?

Oscar, Since you purchased yours a year ago you and I have different models. They revamped the entire line in the latter part of 2014. Mine came fully assembled except for the table / fence so I didn’t have the set-up woes that you had. The manual is a joke though, it was written by someone who speaks English as a second language for sure. After I figured out the band fitment problem I love mine. It’s a 1.5 hp with 12” resaw capacity, has a resaw pivot, light, mobile base, 21”x16” granite table and a circle cutting attachment that is really simple but nice. I got it for 25% off and the shipping was $49 for all three of the machines I ordered.

I was not complaining about my purchase in my op. I was just letting others know about the change coming in case someone was planning on ordering from them in the future.

I hope you find something you like better and am sorry yours isn’t up to snuff. Mine runs smooth and is very quiet. Cuts great and I could be happier with any of the machines I purchased from them.

Good Luck,
James
