Topic tags/keywords: maple finish oil poly picture framing frame frames samples

I was recently given several small sticks of maple from a big box store. Having never worked with maple, I don’t really know what to do with it or how to bring out it’s natural luster. I will be making some framing samples out of them. I don’t really have enough to make up a bunch of finish samples. Since finish is part of my design, I thought I’d post it here. Please advise.

I don’t stain. I usually use an oil finish to bring out any grain that is present in the maple and then use shellac as a top coat. It also soaks into the figure in the wood to pop the grain.
