I just ordered a Freud’s Box Joint Cutter Set – Freud Box Joint Cutter Set

Found it for $58.95 on Amazon.com – cheapest price I could find for it – everybody else had them at about $79.95. Has anyone tried this yet? It sounds (based on the reviews) that it makes some fantastic box joints, fairly easily. I will let you all know once I get it in and give it a try.

How is it different than the dado blade? I will be making some shop drawers and will be using box joints for them. Should I invest in one rather than using my dado set?

Mario: That was my first thought also. It sounds like a Dado set by another name.

Does it have shims to tweek the cut width?

I went and looked it up. It cuts 1/4 and 3/8 box joints only so it is not a replacement for a dado set.

Mario, from what I’ve read about it the biggest difference between the Box Joint blades and a Dado Blade is the obvious width limitations (1/4” & 3/8” only) is that the Box Joint set will make perfectly flat bottom cuts – which you may or may not be able to get with the dado. I have an old Craftsman dado set, a Craftsman wobble blade AND now the Freud Box Joint Blade. I have never been happy with the dado joints – we’ll see how the Box Joint Blade works. From what I’ve read in the reviews and Roger’s statement above I think I will be happy with it. If anyone is thinking about buying a set – you can order them from the LJ Store at the same price that I paid – $58.95 (wish I had thought it checking here first, I will for future purchases).

I have the set and love it. Yes it is a specalized dado set that creates dead flat joints that are exactly 1/4” or 3/8” wide. You can use the multiple pass method to make wider dados. The blade works extreamly well, just be sure you don’t get too much dust in between the blades and keep the carbide from hitting the other blade when tightning the arbor nut down.

Bill,

I’ve been thinking about buying one of these. Right now I have the Sears wobble dado set, which is a pain to set up accurately. I want to make some box joints. Do you think it would be wiser to just get a Freud stacked dado set, which would do a lot of widths, as opposed to this setup which will only do two sizes?

Thanks,

Tom, if you have been using a wobble dado blade you will be in for a treat with this one. I have a stacked set, the wobble blade and now the box joint blades. Obviously you can cut box joints in many different ways, I also have a couple of gadgets to cut them on my router table, but NONE of the methods are as easy and quick to use as the dado blade set and jig that you make for it. Obviously you can do a lot more with a Freud stacked set – but there will be quite a bit of difference in price. The box joint blades do 1/4” or 3/8” dados and the box joints only – but it does it quite well. Hope this helps in your decision process.

My first post so be gentle…...
I purchased one and love it. Box joints are dead flat off the saw and easy setup. It took a little time to get my jig set but once it was everything is dead on. Unfortunately I paid 79.95.
