Google announced that sites not mobile friendly will drop in search results.

Those folks in Mobile are real picky.

I bet Tuscaloosians like LJ just fine.

I agree with the Google comments.

Using it on my Android smartphone is difficult even turning it sideways. But that is true with many different sites.

I use it on a tablet which is 8.9” and not bad at all. Yes, I have to use my fingers to expand the screen but it works fine.

While I agree kind of with Google, it really makes little difference to me. I do not think that LJ should spend the time trying to fix anything. Other members have reported more significant issues which are getting attention.

I don’t hardly ever use my phone for the internet so it’s not too bothersome to me. I did use a tablet some and it wasn’t all that bad. Since I have a laptop which I use with my laser engraver I use it for my mobile surfing. It’s not a large laptop but works fine.

I cannot think of one site that does work as well on a smartphone as it does on a laptop or desktop.

Nothing more than the opinion of a couple of people who work for Google, or maybe even a set of parameters written into a program designed to “yay or nay” a program, based on the parameters you listed.

When we reach the point where a handheld takes the place of a laptop, that is when I might just get off the net, for the most part.

LJ does not have a mobile site. What you’re seeing on any mobile device is the “standard” site through a small screen.

Personally I hate most mobile internet sites and almost always switch to desktop mode when there’s an option. Call me a sycophant but I like LJ just fine on my phone.

Minor issues that affect one or two people, or people who refuse to use adblock. I personally consider usability and functionality to be significant.

The problem with websites like LJ is they were designed like a printed page, where you have a defined universal page size and everyone will see the end product exactly the same. The web was never meant to be used that way and it doesn’t work when you have a variety of end devices with screens from 3” to 30”+. It isn’t necessary to have mobile apps or special mobile websites, those are just ways of controlling how you see information.

The coding of this site is not set up for mobile view.

It is something they are working on to find a solution.

I agree that this site is a little hard to use on my phone. And I use it all the time. The biggest problem I have is using the search bar. trying to click on the results.
With that said, I have not seen a single mobile site that I like to use.
Would an app that ypu download work any better than a mobile web site?

MixedMartialArts.com and MMAJunkie.com have great apps. It doesnt have to be totally bells and whistles, in fact i think that trying to put tons in an app will make it hard to use. For instance, the UFC app really blows.

Thanks for the update.

Used to be I didn’t read forums on my phone. These days there are four woodworking forums I read/participate on, three on my mobile, LJ is the only one I read on my desktop.

Definitely tough on any mobile device. I scan the site in the evenings on my iPad and it’s like pulling teeth to get it to work right. I agree that we need an app, or at least a mobile version of the site. I’m sure the Google ads and Adwords revenue is plenty to be able to afford some extra development. I’d even pay a buck or two for the app just for convenience. How about pre selling it to members for $.99 to raise the funds to develop the app?
