Topic tags/keywords: tip What do you folks think of have a verification process for posting, at least until this SOB spammer decides to go away. Maybe Martin could add on of those windows where you type a randomly displayed set of characters before any postings are accepted. I know it is a PIA but maybe this guy will get the message and leave us in peace. Lew |

Are you getting much spam? I think I’ve gotten 2 since I joined, both fairly recently, but I’m wondering if others are getting inundated with junk. -- Gary, Los Angeles, video game animator |

Gary, I meant this fool who is posting all this crap on the LJ site. I don’t get any thru my email. I agree David, don’t open it! Unfortunately, I doubt if that will stop him. Maybe he will get tired of the game on his own and go away. |

It is a royal PITA when that idiot posts so many junk posts in the blog area. I would hate to see things need to be approved but maybe there is a way to have a “trial period” for new members before they are able to post a blog without approval. I can’t believe the problem is caused by any long term LJ. Any way to revoke the membership of the fool? |

Maybe we could have a safe sender list. After you’ve been a nice kind person then some of the slowdown requirements would disappear. -- What happens in the workshop stays in the workshop. No wait that doesn't sound right. Karson Southern Delaware karson_morrison@bigfoot.com † |

I agree with all of you =I think Martin should limit how many posts we post (perday) in any of the categorys = projects, blogs Etc. , I find it kind of thoughtless of others to post so many posts that it pushs others off the home page-s . I don’t know how hard it would be for Martin to do this but if this Jerk keeps blogging us with His/her spam we could blow right past it and it wouldn’t push other Ljs out of the way. -- Rj's Woodworks,San Jose & Weed Ca, |

Much as I hate spam, I’m hoping it’s just an isolated incident, and not a sign of things to come that will require dramatic changes to site policy, like post limits, or white and black lists. Hopefully Martin will be up soon (isn’t it night over there right now?) and he can just ban that account, and the person won’t be interested in signing up again. Banned a few times and they’ll probably give up. At least, I hope so. The posts should be deleted, too. My other thought is to create a league of Super LJs, headed by Karson along with a few others who can meet in emergency meetings at any hour of the day or night, and when all (3?) of their keys are inserted and turned at the same time, they’ll be granted the momentary power to purge one user, and all their posts and comments from the site. This is of course only to be used in our darkest hour. That hour may be upon us. If we do get a post-per-day limit – as per Rj – I hope it’s no less than 3, and at least 5. I can’t always find time to post with work and projecst, but when I can, I’ll do a little spree of posts on things I’ve been saving up. If I don’t strike while the iron’s hot, I fall far behind. I want to be encouraged to do more so I can post more, and vice versa, not limited so I’ll say “Well, I can’t post anymore today anyway… maybe I’ll wait until tomorrow to finish this thing.” :) -- Gary, Los Angeles, video game animator |

Gary or anyone else ! All I’m saying is everybody who posts something wants it to be seen ! and out of courtesy to other LJS it would be nice not to be pushed out of the way by someone who wants to post 4-5 or more posts . -- Rj's Woodworks,San Jose & Weed Ca, |

I think Martin may want to look into moderating new members posts. As in reviewing them before they are posted. Yahoo groups does that. -- There is no such thing as a mistake. Its called a design modification Rick Kruse, Grand Rapids, MI |

How about an “Alert” or “Ignore” button that will 1) automatically alert Martin to consider deleting posting and member from L J’s; 2) The “Ignore” button will filter out this user from your viewing. I don’t know if a program for the “Ignore” button is available, but I think I’ve seen it before on another forum. Personally a “DELETE INTRUDER” button with a trap door that goes to Nowherland is fine with me. -- "They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." ~ Edgar Allan Poe |

I think there is a way to track this guys IP address and then block him from the site. That is of couse assuming he is using a static IP address. Look at that…I just pulled “static IP address” out and I think I used it in the proper context. I must be becoming a computer nerd. -- Chad from Chicago's North Shore |

I posted this in the blogs too but maybe I can get more attention here… There are a few things to do here. Most spamming operations are from China and a growing number are from India and the Phillipines. So you can ban those IP addresses. That might be going too far so other things you can do is to rel=”nofollow” all links on the whole site. |

Rj – I think I’m actually confusing the issue here. I don’t post multiple projects. I’ll make a few blog entries on my own personal blog, but only post a project when I’m fully completed with one. I think I only have a few of those total so far. However, there’s another issue here. LumberJocks is growing at a steady pace. It’s unrealistic to hope people will post less and less as more woodworkers join up, just so everyone has the old fair shot at getting their project seen for as long a time as possible. I think it’s also not as beneficial to the site itself. Social media sites, like Flickr, facebook, LiveJournal, et al live and breathe through growth and activity. Right now the Pulse is like a busy neighborhood, but as the site grows, it’ll be more like downtown Tokyo eventually :) What happens in these situations is that things break into microcosms. No one will ever keep up with it all, but people won’t really try, either. Just as you can’t meet everyone you pass on the street and get deeply involved with them, or have everyone who passes by become involved with you – even briefly – it simply becomes more about having a look through when you have time, and – just like meeting people in real life (friends of friends, and such) – you happen upon little treasures, like woodworkers, or projects you love, and you dive deeper into that, add them as friends, and become notified of their new stuff, and now you’re in a circle of friends amid a sea of woodworkers. You can grow this at your own pace, just as we’re doing now. I’ll probably add some more friends soon, and do especially if I find someone whose posts I love, but I’m already kind of maxed out on how much I can keep up with, so I tend to mostly just see notifications about posts from my buddies, then occasionally dive into the Pulse when I have a moment. On the flip side, the more people there are, the more there are who will see your posts in the more brief time that they’re on the front page, so it somewhat balances out. Another important thing is relevant tags. It helps draw people to you when they search for things related to what you’re doing. Anyway, I’m not really arguing with you. I agree that it would be great to have all eyes on my projects :) I just don’t think your wish is very realistic in a site that keeps getting bigger and bigger. Everyone’s channeling through that front page. It’ll only see faster and faster scrolling, and asking everyone to limit themselves more and more isn’t only unlikely, it’s stifling to the whole point of the site. My 2 cents! -- Gary, Los Angeles, video game animator |

RJ I think that you are confusing the issue a bit here, This is not about LJ’s that may make mulitable posts, its about some person(s) who have pbeen posting mulitable blogs consisting of just names and words, at least one of which contained virus(s). Martin is aware of this and has been removing then asap and is working on something to filter these type of people. This isn’t about taking up others space its about protecting our site for legitmate users including those people who just moniter us for awhile before joining and of course not discourageing advertizers. -- RTB. Rj – I was actually thinking about our conversation when I woke up this morning, and the obvious occurred to me… I probably wouldn’t post more than 1 project in a day, because I don’t want to compete with myself for views and comments! :) I’d much prefer a day or two of conversation about the ins and outs of a project than quick, less-involved talk on multiple things I’d made. I’m reminded of other sites I’ve posted to, wherein I had many things to post about. I’ve actually written out multiple posts when I had time in a text editor and saved them to my desktop. Then as I’ve had less time the rest of the week, I’ve simply opened the next in line and posted it each following day. So yeah, I’m probably not someone to worry about ;) Oh, and thanks for the kind words! -- Gary, Los Angeles, video game animator |
